Lou Dobbs Running for President?

Lou Dobbs Running for President? Nativist windbag Lou Dobbs seems to be running a stealth campaign for president, writes Political Insider’s Cicero.

Is populist CNN broadcaster Lou Dobbs mulling a political future? Writing at CNN.com last week, Dobbs said, “One year from now, we will have elected a new president. As eager as I am for that reality, I can’t imagine any one of the current candidates for their party’s nomination being chosen by the American people to lead this nation for the next four years. I believe the person elected a year from now will be an Independent populist, a man or woman who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites.”

Dobbs continued, “As I travel around the country, my feeling about the lack of true candidates is validated by those I talk with: They are not excited about the candidates seeking their party’s nomination.” He concluded by saying, “I believe next November’s surprise will be the election of a man or woman of great character, vision and accomplishment, a candidate who has not yet entered the race.”

He goes on to note that Dobbs is about to go on a nationwide book tour touting “himself as America’s premier critic of globalization, free trade accords, and loose immigration policies.”

My guess is that Dobbs wouldn’t want to give up his lucrative gig at CNN to run a futile independent run. Certainly, though, he wouldn’t have trouble getting the nomination of one or more existing small parties and thus have a relatively easy path to the ballot.

It isn't to hard to imagine him talking up the idea as part of promoting the book tour. Whose book is more likely to sell well? Potential 2008 independent candidate or CNN 'nativist windbag'?

Same person, different return on investment.

All that said, I think someone is going to step in to the green or unity08 party slot. The real question is if they will be able to pull enough votes to sink one or the other party candidates and thus 'throw' the election.

Well if Lou was planning on running he should have already thrown his hat into the race. I doubt seriously that he will run in 08. That doesn't mean he doesn't have other election goals for the future.

Perhaps he will move in James's district and run for senator?

;)
