Marvel Kills Off Captain America

Marvel Comics has Captain America assassinated by a sniper in the latest issue, hitting the newsstands today. The publishers are being coy about whether someone else will wield the mighty shield, but insist that “This is the end of Steve Rogers, the meat and potatoes guy from 1941.”

We shall see. Rogers has been killed off, only to return years later from “suspended animation.” He’s hung up the cowl before, only to become Nomad and ultimately put the red-white-and-blues back on. He’s been replaced by a panoply of other guys in similar costumes. My guess is that, in the not-too-distant-future, Marvel will figure out another implausible way to bring him back.

Many more details at Gone Hollywood.

Uncle Ben alive would be a great comic! Spidey asks himself, what was it all for?

(Along the lines of the Onion's 1918 front page, "Austrian Archduke Found Alive -- 'How Fares Europe?' He Asks.")

He won't come back. He'll be replaced by Captain Global, who submits all of his proposed crimefighting actions for UN approval.

Actually, Uncle Ben Parker (kind of) came back recently in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, leaving Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) as the only...

Um... how about Gwen Stacy? Nope, she came back as a clone.

Captain Ned Stacy? I think he's still safely planted...
