That's the question, really: to what degree are the dogma and principles of a Christian denomination driven by the Word of God, as interpreted by both the clergy and the layman, vs. being driven by the non-secular social opinion of the laity. Based on what you've reported here, James, it sounds like the two are in conflict in the Methodist church.
