Michelle Obama Eats Well

Lisa Schiffren of NRO’s The Corner passes on a NY Post Page Six report that — brace yourself –  Michelle Obama ordered some expensive food!

While he was at a meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Michelle Obama called room service and ordered lobster hors d’oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne, a tipster told Page Six.

Schriffren reckons this set this ran $350 and laments the decline of the American political class.

Does anyone else remember Gerald Ford toasting his own English Muffins in the family quarters of the White House? Michelle’s style is a little more Leona Helmsley, who’s ad campaign featured a picture of herself in one of her hotels, with the slogan, “a hotel fit for a Queen.”  Can you do that at the White House?

I’m not a seafood fan and can’t afford to stay at the Waldorf-Astoria, let alone order room service there.  But, as it happens, the Obamas (and the McCains) can.  So, so what if they’re ordering pricey chow?  And, goodness, when did National Review, founded by the late unapologetic plutocrat William F. Buckley, Jr., start banging the faux populism drum?

UPDATE (10/22): The Post has published a retraction:  “THE source who told us last week about Michelle Obama getting lobster and caviar delivered to her room at the Waldorf-Astoria must have been under the influence of a mind-altering drug. She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too.”

The substance of the post — that what Mrs. Obama eats is of no concern to me — remains unaltered by this new information.

They just need their wealth redistributed.

    Ask Chris.

this is the reason why i do not contribute to political campaigns at the national level – So I give a few hundred dollars? For what? So she can stay in $2000 suites and eat $350 meals – One day I may be able to afford to live like them, unless of course Obama is elected and redistributes my lobster money.

  4. Yay… gossip columns… you know what I heard? I heard McCain had a black baby out of wedlock! Oh, and Obama and Paris Hilton, OMG, they were seen dancing at PURE in LV! And Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain… the love the dares not speak its name!

Page Six –> NRO –> OTB

    Ugh

  5. Wayne says:

McCain’s pricey shoes were front page news where it was ask how can someone with expensive shoes be in touch with the common man. I suppose spending several hundred dollars on a meal is more reasonable then spending it on a pair of shoes. .

  6. just me says:

At least McCain gets to wear his pricy shoes more than one time.

Honestly I really don’t care about these types of stories. I don’t care if McCain or Obama wears expensive suits, their wives wear $3,000 dollar earrings and dressed, or they order $300 dollar meals. As long as they are paying for them, that is their choice and their bank accounts.

I also kind of find it a bit creepy that people actually care about these things and actually take the time to notice and report them, but then I guess that is what gossip columns are for.

I wonder where Joe the Plumber ate.

  8. Dave Schuler says:

In answer to James’s question, when National Review ceased being an unabashedly elitist paleocon journal and made the transition to being a neocon and social conservative one, significantly less critical of the Republican Party. Must be nearly a generation ago.

  9. Janis Gore says:

Joe probably ate a steak, cooked just the way he likes it on the propane grill, with a big microwave baked potato loaded up with margarine, sour cream, Hormel bacon bits and cheese shredded by Kraft, with a pass at a salad made with iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, and ranch dressing.

What a lot of well-paid working class guys eat everyday, if they can get a good price on a whole ribeye, cut it, and put the parts in the freezer.

Sweet, Floyd. Got any minstral jokes you want to share with us?

  12. Eileen says:

I wonder if we’ll be allowed to speak against an Obama Administration the way we speak out against Bush? If the way the Obama campaign and Obama’s media thugs have gone after ‘Joe the Plumber’ is any indication of what life would be like for the ‘average Joe’ under the Obama rule, I think we should all get used to the idea of living in a Communist regime, with our hard earned dollars given to those who did nothing to earn them, and with our opinions kept silent for fear of reprisal. Good-bye, America, it was wonderful while it lasted. We love you and we’ll miss you.

“Let them eat cake,” said Michelle Obama, “and a plate full of lobster.”

  14. Bithead says:

    Yay… gossip columns…

One of the more lame comments I’ve seen today. Note, please, that nobody has disputed the facts shown in the story.

And, goodness, when did National Review, founded by the late unapologetic plutocrat William F. Buckley, Jr., start banging the faux populism drum?

About 2 seconds after Obama decided it was important to his image. What, after all, is Obama running on, but a populist appeal, when he stands up at the Al Smith dinner… a white tie affair…

Beyond the walls of this hotel, on the streets of one of the greatest cities in the wealthiest nation on earth, there are men and women and children who have fallen on hard times and hard luck, who can’t find work, or even a job that pays enough to keep a roof over their heads. Some are hanging on just by a thread.

And so the Obamas, expressing their love and concern, go back to the room and consume lobster hors d’oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne. The concern of the Oabamas for the less fortunate, and their connection with everyman is obvious, ain’t it?

The point being of course, not that the folks at NR are about supporting the poor, this is no measurement of that. What it does measure rather well, though, is the hypocrisy inherent in the Obamas.

  15. Bithead says:

I wonder if we’ll be allowed to speak against an Obama Administration the way we speak out against Bush?

Better ask Joe the Plumber what happens to people who dare disturb the chosen one.

  16. anjin-san says:

Hummm. Having a nice meal is an outrage. Using your juice to have personal cell phone coverage set up at one of your many homes is not.

    Ahhh, the aristocracy of pull…

  17. Floyd says:

    Sam;
No, but it took a minute to realize your racism.
Apparently you think all blacks look alike?
    Is that what you meant?

  18. Janis Gore says:

Just for the heck of it, menus and prices at the Waldorf are here.

  19. Bithead says:

Having a nice meal is an outrage. Using your juice to have personal cell phone coverage set up at one of your many homes is not.

Perhaps the difference is, McCain isn’t the one chastising the rich for the ‘conspicuous consumption’… and Obama is the one making a big deal about how the rich are evil, huh?

  20. Grewgills says:

Been eating those funny mushrooms again Bitsy?

  22. sam says:

No, but why don’t you take a minute and tell me what you meant in your post. Just whom were you referring to with the word ‘wookie’?

  23. anjin-san says:

Obama is the one making a big deal about how the rich are evil

Bits, you get funnier by the moment. Every third line out of McCain/Palin’s mouth is about “the greed an corruption on Wall Street”. Who do you think they are talking about… the panhandles outside the brokerage houses?

  24. anjin-san says:

Well we are at it let’s discuss “spread the wealth around”. After all, McCain wants me to make up the difference for the guy down the street who bought a house he could not afford, then refied 18 months later and bought a boat.

Sounds like McCain is into spreading it around to me.

  25. Bithead says:

Obama is the one making a big deal about how the rich are evil

Been eating those funny mushrooms again Bitsy?

Well, let’s see…. is this the same Obama that was so worried about McCain owning 7 houses and claiming that he was out of touch because he was rich? Oops, huh?

Ya know for all your bluster, Anjin, the concept of wisdom would seem to have given you a miss.

  26. Grewgills says:

  27. Bithead says:

I’ll take that as an ‘oops’.

  28. Grewgills says:

Actually, the NY Post has published a retraction. J-Dawg, you might want to update the post: http://www.nypost.com/seven/10212008/gossip/pagesix/room_disservice_134490.htm

  31. Michael says:

We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too.

Shouldn’t it be standard policy that if an anonymous source feeds you provably false information, that the don’t remain anonymous when you issue your retraction?

I also wonder if Bithead will also post a retraction of his comments about the Obamas, now that the foundation of those comments has been proven false. Or if he will continue to not let facts get in the way of his beliefs.

  32. Egirl in Iowa says:

The media is freaking out about the cost of a bunch of Sarah Palins clothes? Yet, they make no issue of the fact of what Obama’s home cost, or where he came up with the money, or the clothes he wears and what they cost, and Michelle Obama ordering LOBSTERS and Iranian Caviar for LUNCH?
    Give me a B-R-E-A-K!

  33. susis c cheese says:

I think you should put the retraction to this bunk, at the TOP of the page, or put a big CANCEL across the entire article.

A real reporter would first confirm a story, instead of printing rumors.
but hey, Outside the Beltway is very “tabloid-like”.

A real reporter would first confirm a story, instead of printing rumors.
but hey, Outside the Beltway is very “tabloid-like”.

From what I’ve seen, a “real reporter” would either ignore the fact they they were completely wrong, or print a small retraction in the next edition. While OTB isn’t investigative, it’s certainly not “tabloid-like”.
