Moscow Suicide Bomber Kills Ten

Car Explosion Kills 10, Injures 33 Near Moscow Subway (Bloomberg)

A car explosion in northern Moscow near the entrance to the Rizhskaya underground railway station killed 10 people and injured 33, said a Federal Security Service spokesman, speaking on state-owned Rossiya television. Two cars caught fire after a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near the station, the spokesman Sergei Ignatchenko said on television.

Eyewitnesses saw a woman walking toward the subway station, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said on television. When the woman saw police checking documents near the station, she turned around and an explosion followed, Luzhkov said. “It was a big load of explosive, equal to as much as a kilo of TNT,” Luzhkov said. “The bomb was loaded with screws and other small metal objects.”

The blast comes a week after two Russian passenger airplanes crashed simultaneously after explosions, killing all 89 aboard. Russian President Vladimir Putin today said the explosions were the work of terrorists linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Hat tip to Jeff Quinton, who sent an e-mail earlier.
