Mugabe Re-Elected in Landslide

OTB projects, with 0% of the precincts reporting, that Robert Mugabe will be re-elected as president of Zimbabwe by a wide margin. Exit polls reveal that the prime factors in motivating voters are a fear of being murdered and the lack of opposition candidates on the ballot.

Security was also a prime concern: “I’ve got no option but to go and vote so that I can be safe,” explained a young woman selling tomatoes.

Angus Shaw of the AP reports unusually heavy turnout.

I can't wait for Carter's announcement of how the election was fair and represents the will of the people.

yetanotherjohn -

If he condemns the election, will you publicly apologize for your remark?

Alex,
If he condemns the election and explains how this is any different from the frauds he has endorsed in the past, then yes, I will.

From the AP article:

"The official inflation rate was put at 165,000 percent by the government in February, but independent estimates put the real figure closer to 4 million percent."

How bad are things when the government propaganda estimates inflation at 165,000 percent, or 450% A DAY - and that propaganda underestimates inflation by a factor of 24?

Using the independent estimates, inflation in Zimbabwe amounts to 1% every 7.8 seconds. That means that in the time it takes to drink a beer, the price of that beer will have doubled!

I'll bet it was because he offered the Zimbabwaan people "hope" and "change"

Of course Mugabe is actually the McCain figure, the semi-senescent war hero who doesn't have the sense to retire.

Sort of inspires one to think in terms of cautionary tale-style verse... perhaps a series of verses of ZANU-PF's and its leader's atrocities, each ending with:

"My Son, Neither a Robber nor a Mugger Be,
Like that Evil Old Mugger of Zimbabwe..."

Terrible pun - but a terrible situation too.
