NOBODY SAID LIFE WAS FAIR, CASE #12,397

This WaPo story, “Hard to Get Good Help” reminds us that the offensive and defensive coordinators of the two Super Bowl teams will have to wait another year to get a head coaching job, since all the vacancies have already been filled. Who got the last one? Why, Sean Payton, who was assistant head coach-quarterbacks coach of the Dallas Cowboys, whose offense and quarterback were both lousy in his one year with the team and who was relieved of playcalling duties by the moribund New York Giants last season.

Update: Shockingly, while I was getting a link for the Payton hire, I learn that Payton has turned down the offer from the Raiders and will stay with the Cowboys. Bizarre.

Well, working for Al Davis is like working for someone who believe he knew how to do your job better than you'll ever know. And a control freak on top of that. One reason he burn through so many coachs in the past 10 years.

I would think that the NFL teams could wait until the Super Bowl ends to hire a coach. I don't think that waiting a few more weeks to hire a coach makes that much of a difference.

It's pretty much a 365 day a year job. Plus, someone else might grab the coach you wanted while you were waiting for the coordinators to get freed up. It's a gamble.

I haven't heard any speculation to suggest that Davis is considering it - or that he'd have a shot at him if he were - but this Raiders fan would be pretty pleased if Romeo Crennel got the job. I know the Cardinals were interested in him, so he may be in play.
