I cannot believe that with all else that is going on the world (like George's War now costing us <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-na-warcosts22sep22,0,234891.story" rel="nofollow">$12 billion per month</a>), you folks are still whimpering about an ad in a newspaper.

Get some <a href="http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1663424,00.html?cnn=yes" rel="nofollow">perspective</a>, for heavens sake!

Feh. I smell someone a-bucklin' to political pressure. If the rate given to MoveOn really was "wrong", why did the NYT give that same rate to other organizations, as the article describes? The article doesn't seem to give the timing between those other offers and the declaration that it was the wrong rate, but something just doesn't add up.

More Shocking News From the Campaign Trail:

Word is leaking out of Iowa that the Cedar Rapids Best Western gave John McCain a senior citizens discount for a busy weekday night, even though company policy provided that the senior rate should only be given on weekends or when the hotel was less than 80% full.

Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, the Union-Leader made an editorial decision to favor one policy over another in the editorial column of its newspaper.

I can't sleep at night wondering what awful things these "free presses" will do next to undermine my first Amendment right not to have to hear criticism of public figures that I admire.

O God, more trivia. Its not 'Saint' Petraeus, its 'General' Petraeus who is not a law onto himself and is answerable to our elected officials who in turn are answerable to us. He did what he was told to do and that's fine, he's a soldier and is supposed to take and follow orders from his commander in chief, but lets not pretend that his word is Gospel, that his honour is beyond reproach or that he doesn't have a very clear agenda which is to make absolutely sure he is not the General in charge when the troops are told to get out.

The good news is that outside of committed supporters of the war and subsequent surge, no one is talking about the moveon ad or how much was paid for it. Petraeus's testimony and Bush's follow up had little or no effect on the way people feel. They know the war was bogus just as they know Petraeus's facts are bogus. The surge may have dampened down violence in selected areas but it cannot change the political reality which is that the Shiite majority has no intention of sharing power with Sunnis and whether American troops stay or go, there will be a reckoning.

If the Joint Chiefs of Staff are warning all and sundry that the surge cannot be sustained indefinitely, don't you think our enemies know this too? We need a better plan and we need to stop being sidetracked by issues that serve no other purpose than to distract us from confronting the seriousness of our situation.

I also tend to think that a lot of controversies of this nature tend to exaggerate how much normal people really think/care about politics in the course of doing their day-to-day job responsibilities. I think most people just want to do their job and stay out of trouble.
