NYT reports that the US is considering substantially reducing the number of troops stationed in Germany. (Curiously, there is no mention of this on the DoD homepage.) Sounds like a reasonable move to me, although I’d like to know more details. While it makes sense to have troops forward-deployed in Europe, having an entire Army corps plus several Air Force bases headquartered there seems a bit much over a decade after the Cold War. Having deployed from Germany for Gulf War I, I can attest to the logistical headaches inherent in trying to move troops and equipment rapidly out of a high population density country with extremely narrow roadways.

He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.
