Obama Debate Talking Points Leaked

Politico has gotten “A copy of Obama surrogates’ pre-debate talking points [which] slipped out inadvertently on a campaign press list this morning.” The first may look familiar:
This is John McCain’s last chance to turn this race around and somehow convince the American people that his erratic response to this economic crisis doesn’t disqualify him from being President.
Why, that’s what the mainstream press is saying! This clearly proves they’re in the tank for Obama! (Of course, that’s what pretty much everyone, even McCains’ supporters, are saying, too.)
The rest of the points are equally banal and obvious.

Or leaked to get them circulating through the media for free. If they're really lucky, they'll even be echoed on center-right blogs like.....oh, nevermind.
Exactly how should have McCain responded to the current crisis? He is one of a hundred senators not president. Going back to Washington was erratic?
What did Obama do for us? That's right, nothing more than McCain.
The leak has accomplished what it was intended to do, start people talking about Obama without actually giving any facts. The same game plan, lots of general platitudes, no specifics, no substance.

But Steve, Obama didn't "drop everything" and "suspend his campaign" to rush back to Washinton and do nothing, right? Oh yeah, McCain didn't rush back to Washington--first he stiffed Letterman, then he went on Katie Couric's show, then he "dropped everything" and "suspended his campaign" and sorta rushed back to Washington to do nothing. I mean, c'mon, I think even you'll have to agree that turned out to be a WTF? moment in McCain's campaign, right? Followed, of course, by his appearance at the debate that he said he wouldn't appear at because he had to "drop everything" and "suspend his campaign" and .... And you wonder why some think the man is erratic?

So McCain takes a gamble on going back to Washington to deal head on with this crisis and it's erratic? It's politics. He stiffs Letterman and it's erratic? How many people watch Letterman?
It may have been a bit of showmanship to go back to Washington but it was not erratic. I expect the Obama campaign is throwing this out to reinforce the notion McCain is a hothead. It's weak.
Campaigns are somewhat disorganized at times and it seems the McCain campaign messed up a little but that doesn't make McCain erratic.
Again, what did Obama do for us on the economic front? No more than McCain or any other of the one hundred.
Perhaps "erratic" means:
1) Spending freeze!
- exempt defense & veterans
2) Buy bad mortgages at face value!
3) Spending freeze!
- exempt veterans, defense, scientific research, & entitlements
4) Cut capital gains tax!
5) ...
6) Profit!

Campaigns are somewhat disorganized at times and it seems the McCain campaign messed up a little but that doesn't make McCain erratic.
"somewhat disorganized"? Any fair observer of the McCain campaign would have to conclude that it has lurched from one position to the next. And who do you think makes the final decision on the direction of the campaign? What you call a bit of "showmanship" struck most observers as impulsive, i.e., erratic. Then there was, as I pointed out, the appearance at the first debate that he wasn't going to go to because.... Then there was the abrupt pulling out of Michigan that caught Palin by surprise. Then there was the "let's demonize Obama for his associations" and the, all too predictable, nosedive in the polls and the increase in McCain's unfavorables, followed by the attempt by McCain to get off the back of the tiger he'd unleashed. Steve, if all this doesn't strike you as flailing, that is to say, erratic, then we'll just have to agree to disagree.
