Off to Montreal

The wife and I are heading off to Montreal and Quebec City for a few days’ vacation.

I’ll almost certainly get a bit of blogging in but much less than usual. In addition to the regular gang, a couple of guest bloggers may drop by.

There are thousand of reasons to visit both cities, but among the top three are ris du veau, or sweetbreads, aka, the thymus gland of calves (veal).

Almost impossible to find in US eateries, they will be prominently displayed as a specialty in the better restaurants in both cities. The real problem is that there is no standardized dish, each chef approaches their preparation differently.

Failure to order this delectable dish while in Montreal or Quebec is a culinary crime of high order and will be reported to the authorities!!!

Enjoy, and I am turning green...

In addition to Paulie's suggestion, make sure you eat a bunch of poutine (and maybe a few Tim Hortons' maple donuts for good measure).

Also check out the plethora of micro-brews and brew pubs.

In Montreal, Benelux is my favorite (245 Sherbrooke ouest)--they have a wide selection. Le Cheval Blanc (809 Rue Ontario Est) is also really good--particularly on white Belgian ales.

Have a wonderful time.

Do not send temperature reports. OK?

Thanks, all.

I'm not that adventurous and eater, so will likely pass on the sweetbreads. I've done poutine and some microbrews already. Liking the Rickard's White.

I'll do Tim Horton's soon. Maybe for breakfast!
