OTB Latenight – Golden Earring

This is one of those songs that everyone knows, but if it comes on the radio and you ask them to name the band, often as not they can’t. Makes for a good bar bet.

About the Author: Dodd, who used to run a blog named ipse dixit, is an attorney, a veteran of the United States Navy, and a fairly good poker player. He can kill a mime using only his thumb.

He joined the staff at OTB in May 2007.

Dodd: Sorry, but I've never heard that song before in my life. Must have been popular when I was out of the country.

When I saw the band name, I knew what the song was gonna be, but I got to be honest, I don't think I could've named the band from the song.

Used to play this one quite a bit at the bar... Talk about your one hit wonders. They deserved more.

about your one hit wonders. They deserved more.

Now that's just not fair. They had one more major US hit: "Twilight Zone" 9 years after RL (plus a couple of minor hits).

In the Netherlands (where they're from), by contrast, they've had over 40 hits and over 30 gold and platinum albums and not one of them's had to have a day job since the Nixon administration.

I hope to never set foot in a bar where this couldpossibly be talked about.
