OTB Latenight – The Who

When I was 8 years old, I got a compilation album in my Santa Claus presents called Star Trackin’ ‘77 — one of those Ronco-style collections. The cover was a picture of a guy in a spacesuit on the lunar landscape with a microphone (which he was holding, inexplicably, outside his helmet; I knew even at 8 that wouldn’t work in a vacuum). This song is the only one I can remember being on it. Which is to say, I’ve pretty much always loved it.

About the Author: Dodd, who used to run a blog named ipse dixit, is an attorney, a veteran of the United States Navy, and a fairly good poker player. He can kill a mime using only his thumb.

He joined the staff at OTB in May 2007.

And now that GA has shared the aggregated wisdom of the far right with us, how about a little rock & roll from the Obama side of the street?

Actually, Dodd, that would have been "Star Trackin' 76"

And just for laughs, here's the track list...

STAR TRACKIN 76 20 ORIGINAL ARTISTS: Rhythm Heritage, theme from swat/ Hot Chocolate, you sexy thing/ Jackson 5, dancing machine/ Blue Magic, sideshow/ Greg Allman, midnight rider/ Temptations, keep holdin on/ Barry Manilow, could it be magic/ Wet Willie, keep on smiling/ Major Harris, love won't let me wait/ Melissa Manchester, just too many people/ The Who, squeeze box/ Salsoul Orchestra, tangerine/ Allman Brothers Band, ramblin man / Eddie Kendricks, keep on truckin/ Marshal Tucker Band, this old cowboy/ Outlaws, gree grass and high tides/ Travis Wammack, more power to you/ Average White Band, cut the cake/ Charlie Ross, without your love (Mr. Jordan)/ Abba, waterloo.

I had a copy, too, back in the day. It got lost somewhere along the way. Likely a girlfriend's place, or something. Some of the very worst editing I've ever heard, trying to make all that fit on one LP.

Do you know, they're still getting $10 for that Ronco thing even today?

Yep, that's it. Wow. I can't believe it's still available anywhere. And don't even ask me what happened to my copy.

Do Bass players EVER get excited?

Mike Mills of r.e.m. does. Embarassingly so sometimes. John Entwistle? Not so much.

A few names leap to mind.
Fran Sheehan of Boston, at least the few times I've seen him play.

Ditto Mel Satcher of Grand Funk, though in a power trio known for high energy, it's kinda hard not to react.

Louis Johnson of the Borthers Johnson.(He of the 'thumb slap' sound)
