Pots Call Kettles REALLY, REALLY Black

Bruce Bawer, author of While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within and Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom, has joined forces with Little Green Footballs blogger Charles Johnson, in excoriating some moderately prominent conservative bloggers as “a bunch of kooks” for their embrace of unsavory elements in the European anti-jihadist community.

You know, when you start to get attacked by the extremists for being too damned extreme, you probably need to tone it down a mite.

UPDATE: This has been brewing for awhile but most readers are probably not familiar with the background.  See Dave Weigel’s Washington Independent writeup, “Civil War Raging in Right-Wing Blogosphere; Terrorism-Watching Conservative Blogs Split Over Accusations of Bigotry and Treason” for a detailed account.   Bawer’s lengthy piece, linked above, skips the blogospheric story, concentrating on the Euro angle.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

"moderately prominent conservative bloggers"? Isn't that the same as a buncha nobodies? Why would you even bring it up? And...what is it exactly you are bringing up? Here is a hint, James: actually explain what you are posting.

Is Charles Johnson really an extremist? That's a strange comment.

Agreement with Capital L. I'm not at all convinced the title fits.

That said, the fact is there's been a split developing on the right for some time now, that I've been writing about since the CPAC and before... essentially a split between the conservatives and the RINOS.

That's best expressed by a clip from my most recent comment at Pajamas Media....

While conservatives and libertarians make up the majority of the GOP, they don’t make up even half of the leadership. The rank and file are interested in principles of conservatism and libertarianism. They want to see those principles applied to governing. The GOP leadership has no interest anymore in such matters, being more enamored with attaining and remaining in power. Those principles are just standing in their way.

What we're seeing in the sphere is simply reflecting that larger battle.

He's been a die-hard on the anti-Islamist thing for years, often bordering on an anti-Islamist stance. Further, his tone has been sufficiently strident to invite an awful cadre of commenters.
