Michael Vick has been transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons minimum security facility in Leavenworth, KS. There he will participate in Bureau of Prisons drug treatment program, which would make him eligible for early release before the end of 2008.
Vick, who failed a drug test while awaiting sentencing in the dogfighting case, is eligible for a federal drug treatment program known as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Inmates are involved in intensive treatment that lasts six to 12 months, with a minimum of 500 hours of treatment.Program (RDAP). Upon completion of the program, the inmate’s eligibility for early release based on previous criminal convictions is determined. Vick did not have any previous convictions before his dogfighting case.
The RDAP accepts inmates, and they are eligible for early release even if they have not been convicted of drug-related offenses provided they meet a series of qualifications. Vick meets those requirements.
He still faces an April 2 trial on state charges in Virginia, however.

The post made me wonder, since I'd thought Leavenworth used to be max-security, the Alcatraz of the plains. Wiki says it's now medium-security, which FAIK may be the same as "minimum."
He'll be out in no time.
Why is the prison system allocating a coveted spot in the RDAP to a prisoner who likely has no significant drug problem? I have never heard of Vick being involved with anything other than marijuana. And his use of marijuana or any other drug must be under reasonable control as he was subject to drug testing by the NFL.
D'you suppose Atlanta will still need a QB by '09 camp? What's the over/under on Vick's being welcomed back into the NFL after he gets out?
