For 'profiling' susbtitute 'statistically accurate projection' and we can start making some progress. But 'profiling' has been so overloaded with pejorative baggage, and is such a useful tool for the demagogues and race pimps, that I fear we are about to hamstring effective law enforcement techniques...

Clearly we have become overly sensitive to this issue, especially vis-a-vis the terrorist problem. Stopping elderly black men for searches (which I have seen) or my 60 year-old mother (twice), or Michael Medved's late elementary school age child (which, according to Medved has happened on more than one occassion) all bespeak of a scewed up system.

If the police find a burning cross in the yard of a black family, it probably isn't good detective work to start talking to all the middle aged black females in the neighborhood, just to be fair. There is more fertile ground to investigate, shall we say.

Two small corrections on the Beltway sniper: 1) they were driving a sedan; and 2) as I understand it some advisors really did feel the perps were black, based on some of the evidence left behind. But Moose wanted a white perp, and was slow to listen.

If I meet someone at a party, I mostly have a clean slate--I try to go easy on preconceived notions (okay; with the exception of men who might be hitting on me--always on guard there). But on the street it's a different matter. You don't get points for being male, and you don't--unfortunately--get points for being black.

I've been mugged three times, and two of those times it was by two black men. I don't let them get close to me after dark, unless I know them. Sorry.

Rational Stereotyping
Via Diotima I see a good article about gender and negotiation that has a remarkably silly statement:''The one way you can guarantee you'll get yourself in trouble is if you expect behavior from any individual based on their group,'' cautions...
