RatherGate

PoliPundit’s Lorie Byrd has dubbed this one RatherGate. I love it.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

Are they definitely fake? I'd prefer to sit this one out until the end. From what I've scraped together unwillingly, though, the superscipt is definitely something that's not a smoking gun. Still, clever-ish.

The "th" is not the smoking gun because, however umlikely, it could have been created in 1972 if someone really wanted to do that and had a big budget and a lot of extra time.
However the letter "p" in New Times Roman is a real smoking gun as the proportions were changed slightly by Mergenthaler, Apple and Microsoft when that font was transformed from lead to computer type.
For the latter reason and many many others there is no question that three of the four letters are fakes.
