RECALL UPDATE

Kevin Drum cites an LA Times poll showing the recall at only 50% yes, 47% no–within the margin of error. Given the lack of excitement that any of the candidates, including Arnold Schwarzenegger (in second place at 25%), seem to be generating, it would be bizarre indeed if Gray Davis pulls this out.

Steven Taylor continues to believe Davis is “toast.” That’s my guess as well, simply because those against the recall are likely to be less enthusiastic–and thus, less inclined to take the trouble to vote–than anti-Davis forces.

There is something going on here of interest, at least to stats geeks, as the Field Poll has consistently predicted a larger pro-recall number than has the LA Times poll.

I wouldn't bet on that. All my anti-recall friends are not only planning on voting, they're actively working the GOTV efforts. Its the anti-Davis bunch who seem to be more interested in whining than doing.

RECALL UPDATE

NYT reports the quick settlement of a dispute in the California recall referendum: the lieutenant governor will not assume office but rather, as originally expected, a candidate chosen at the same special election by a simple plurality vote.

Yep, Cruze got caught trying to pull a fast one. I guess he doesn't have the guts to go through the original plan.

RECALL UPDATE

WaPo reports that the leaders of the Gray Davis recall movement are so confident they have enough signatures to put it on the ballot that they are halting their collection efforts. Wow. I disapprove of this use of the recall system but am impressed with the speed at which it has unfolded.

Yeah, ol' Gray is really not very popular around here these days....

Gray Davis would otherwise be impeached and then carried into the street naked on his way to be hung from the nearest light post in Sacramento, if the Democratic party did not have a strangle-hold on the California Legislature.

A voter recall in in out constitution and we are using it with a vengeance on this slimy reptile that masquerades as human.

I have mixed feelings about the recall process, but Gray Davis got himself into this mess, so he deserves whatever happens to him.
