Black comedians like Moms Mabley and Redd Foxx most certainly did. Their records--imagine that quaint technology--sold massively, at least in the recorded comedy niche. I suspect they may be been before your time--the Foxx of TV sitcom fame was utterly neutered--but anyway... I'm not so sure that "people simply didn't talk like that in public."
