Here's a thought... ever hear of the phrase "Follow the Money"? Think Staphylococcal Septicemia. And the added risks 'cutters' present toward the incidence of hospital-based infection. I'm thinking there's no way NHS can get this through, it has to be some Professional group. So maybe the Nurses' guild is telling the truth, but not the WHOLE truth.

Whether or not the issue is suicide, this is a ridiculous arguing point - it's like trying to provide condoms to an STD-infected child molestor!

These nurses need to be more concerned with helping the patients that cut overcome their problems, rather than act as facilitators.

James, I agree with you here, but would like to redirect the conversation a bit - instead of trying to enable teens to engage in self-destructuve behavior, why not try to curb said behavior? Would it be socially responsible for a casino to aggessively advertise to members of a gambling-addiction rehab group? Whatever happened to "First, do no harm"?

Most people who engage in cutting themselves are not in fact suicidal. They cut themselves in non-life-threatening ways in order to relieve anxiety that they cannot express and cannot share with others. Perhaps offering such people a safe, nonjudgmental environment in which to perform this behavior can be the first step to making them feel supported and not judged, and to start working through the anxiety that makes them hurt themselves.

Who's making a moral judgment? I merely note that, if one is slashing one's wrists, infection is hardly a concern.

It's like cleaning the area for the lethal injection needle with an alcohol swab. What's the point, really?

I don't believe these are suicidal patients. There are people, girls mostly I think, who just like to cut themselves.
