Senator John McCain did an interview with the folks at YouTube which was, not surprisingly, made into a YouTube video:
Highlights:
- “I assume that there’s a camera there at all times. You really have to.” Quite right.
- He’s also quite accommodating when asked to give a brief “rant” about government spending.
- He dodges, however, what would seem a softball question as to whether the thinks homosexuality “immoral,” saying that’s “A call that will be made up in Heaven.” Huh?

You may have not understood the "A call that will be made up in heaven", but he was speaking to Christians.
The concept is that God is the judge, we aren't. So is it immoral (aka against the morals), he's passing the buck to God to judge. Or to put it another way, he's not going to cast the first stone. At the same time, he is not endorsing the life style.
What answer would you have suggested he give that wouldn't have offended on the right or the left?

He wasn't asked whether it was a sin or something for which one would burn in Hell. Morality is a human judgment.

An honest answer? He's supposed to be about straight talk, no?
Sorry, but talking about something as immoral or sinful isn't a big distinction for most Christians I know. To say it is moral would be to say it is not sinful (for a Christian) and even looked as a right act. To say it is immoral would be to say it is sinful and not a right act.
If he said that homosexuality was not immoral (aka moral), then he would have plenty of Christians who would say that he might want to re-read certain passages in the Bible.
If he said that homosexuality was immoral, then he would have plenty of progressives taking pot shots at him for being bigoted.
By saying he leaves the judgement up to God, he just may be giving a honest answer as one a lot of Christians would give when asked.
I seem to remember Bush making a similar answer on the same issue when he said how can he condemn one sin but not the others.
He's supposed to be about straight talk, no?
I think that is a call that will be made up in Heaven.
