Not with them being difficult to defend. I second <i>DC Looser</i>'s opinion that this is what Sharon had in mind all along. He just want out of Gaza, sealed it off, and let the jackals eat each others. Remember, Egypt deliberately did not take back Gaza as a parting gift to Israel in their 'peace settlement' brokered by Carter. It makes no military sense to keep those settlements in Gaza. Most observers had said this is exactly what Sharon had planned all along, to consolidate the settlements in the West Bank. Why else is the fence being put up there? Sharon hadn't made any move to curtail the settlements on the West Bank and he's only abandoning those he views as undefendable, namely those in Gaza.
