SiteMeter Debate: Perspective

Earlier, I stumbled on something that may add a bit of sober perspective to the debate over whether SiteMeter is the best measure of blog traffic. A brand new site that I had never heard of, run by a college undergraduate, is currently #5 on the TTLB’s Traffic Rankings, averaging 144,687 unique daily visits for the past week.

Indeed, he’s had more traffic so far this month (3,04o,000+) than OTB has had in its nearly two year history (2,397,000+) and 5,010,195 since opening or business last month. Why? He’s hosting this collection of tsunami videos, topped the search engines with it, and has gotten lots of MSM and blogospheric attention–and a Drudge link.

Note’s site author Jordan Golson,

For all you nerds out there, more than 1 petabyte of videos has been downloaded from this site. That’s the equivalent of over 300,000,000 mp3’s

Amazing.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.

hmmmm The big videos are 10MB and the small ones are about 5MB.

Pretending they are all 10MB that is 100 million downloads in two weeks AND dozens of sites (including my own) mirrored....

Ronald Reagan's "trust but verify" is echoing thru my head. If that is accurate, it is amazing.

Assuming he's telling the unvarnished truth, (A point Paul suggests, correctly, is questionable) one wonders who's paying for the bandwidth. Most undergrads don't have that kinda coin...

Hell, I don't either, come to think on it, which is why I'm still running on Blogspot's servers.
