I've always felt an outsider could not understand American culture if he or she were not familiar with Star Trek. It seemed to distill so much, and a lot of good things, like Kirk's frequent expressed aversion to violence. At the same time, it had an awful lot of silliness about it, which may be the reason it has stuck with us for so long.

[...] Thanks to Outside the Beltway to the tip off on the Star Trek 40th Anniversary. A strong fan of the show for years, I have seen every show. When the Next Generation came out I was very dubious about if I would like it. Needless to say they captured the spirit of Star Trek. I have grown to like each in its own way. Even Deep Space Nine was interesting but not anywhere close to the others two. One reason is (saw a show about it… that’s why ) that the creator’s vision of man becoming better was changed for a more cynical outlook. Something that was done after Gene Rodenberry’s death. Knowing that it is easy to see next time you might watch it. Below is an article clip on the anniversary. Cue the iconic theme music: Forty years ago, on September 8, 1966, “Star Trek” lifted off into TV and cultural history. Over the subsequent decades, the sci-fi adventure series has amassed millions of fans and emerged as a relentless entertainment empire. [...]
