Re troops: I was just watching a YouTube of The Guess Who's "No Time" and I found this comment:

Soldiers fighting in Vietnam, this song playing everywhere, we were in our teens. Very innocent, not aware of the bad side of life. Seeing Woodstock festival and wondering what was happening.

Vietnam. 1969. Not aware of the bad side of life. My God, all those young boys.

Its funny that you assume troops are all conservatives. I don't understand where that stigma comes from. Additionally, I don't think Colbert is a liberal, more of a librarian which is more closely aligned with what real conservatism is supposed to be. Yes, he mocks so-called conservative idiot O'Reilly, but that because of the ridiculousness that is O'Reilly.

Most troops are the demographic age of Colbert's audience, troops are not all uniform conservative automatons who have no sense of humor, BTW.

Peace or wartime, big-time celebrity or lesser known act, I've always appreciated those that came to visit the troops in the fields or the war zones. A big HOO-AH to Stephen Colbert for doing something he surely does not need to do in order to make a lot of people laugh in a place where you need to laugh, because crying is unseemly.

I like Colbert as he is, but even I was glad he changed his act for these shows. I don't think it would have been appropriate for him to be his usual character. And it was still damn funny.

Even though he's a liberal pinko, Colbert's a good egg.

From what I saw, Colbert was pretty well received, as was the president, esp. when he made the joke about his ears.

That was my impression. Soldiers are pretty gracious to USO entertainers and commanders-in-chief. And for all I know Colbert's show is popular with the troops, ideology or no. (I like it, even though I'm not on his side on most issues.) But it's not the same thing as, say, putting on a show at Harvard.

But for a liberal comic known to be opposed to the war to go to the war zone and submit himself to the brutal scrutiny of young soldiers takes a set [of cojones] as well.
