  1. Bill H says:

Hilarity indeed. Olbermann has increasingly become a cartoon and a buffoon, but last night on the subject of the Supreme Court 1st Amendment decision he went into outer space, declaiming at length in his “Special Comment” that this decision was worse than Dred Scott. Usually I find his hyperbole amusing, but I found his overreach last night tiresome and, at times, offensive.

  2. sam says:

Yeah, that was pure comedy gold. Esp. when the guy yelled out [I think], “Stick up your ass, Jew boy!” And Stewart said, “We can do this!” I told my wife this morning I can’t watch Olbermann any more, even though I share his politics. He’s so over the top now. And Chris Matthews is beyond beyond. Thankfully, Bones reruns are available in the same time period.

  3. Ben says:

I’m not a religious man, but thank god for Jon Stewart. His parodies are always spot-on, fair, and uncomfortably vicious.

  4. spago says:

Oh good Alex you’re back…so you’ve just been actively ignoring this as it relates to a previous post of yours (for some reason the archives here are not working and I cannot link it)and perhaps a comment on this or even this or maybe you could wax poetic about how Obama is right about this.

  5. Alex Knapp says:

    spago,

I hadn’t seen that Post article so I appreciate you’re bringing it up. As to the President and the Congress actively working to undermine 800 years of Anglo-American jurisprudence, well, I just find it too depressing to write about at the moment.

  6. James Joyner says:

Stewart and Colbert are both very good at poking fun at transgressors on both sides of the aisle, which is pretty rare outside of the pabulum of a Jay Leno.

Given how poorly politicians of both parties hew to their supposed core values, commentators who strive to attack only one side inevitably become hacks. That’s as true on TV and talk radio as in the blogosphere.

  7. Michael Reynolds says:

Olbermann has become Howard Beale. Someone needs to throw a rope around him before he descends to Glenn Beck levels.

  8. Triumph says:

Jon Stewart is a national treasure.

If, by “national treasure,” you mean “beanheaded liberal,” then you have a point.

Also, Alex Knapp, I noticed this from your bio on the post:

He joined the staff of OTB in June 2006. Additionally, he’s been writing at Heretical Ideas since October, 2001, and also reviews cigars at Cigar Jack’s Cigar News and Reviews.

    FYI:
    Check out this article:

Baker F, Ainsworth SR, Dye JT, et al. Health risks associated with cigar smoking. Journal of the American Medical Association 2000; 284(6):735—740.

  9. Brett says:

That was great, although I get the impression that Colbert could probably make fun of Olbermann much more effectively.

The problem with Olbermann is that he’s just become so damn tedious. Remember when he used to be fun, like when he had the Bush “Stay-the-course” counter way back when? Or when his Special Comments were spread out enough that they actually meant something? He’s lost most of his humor, and he’s over-used the Special Comments for all manner of trivial bullshit (particularly in the election two years ago) so much that they’ve lost all impact.

So what does that leave him? His yes-men guests. Seriously, at least Maddow has some cool guests – Olbermann just brings on the same group of people, asks them obviously leading questions (many of them aren’t questions at all – they’re statements), and then rinse and repeat.

  10. John Burgess says:

…before he descends to Glenn Beck levels.

That, of course, would require the invention of a time machine. And anyway, it would be an aspiration, not a fear. What are Olbermann’s–or MSNBC’s–ratings these days?

  11. Have a nice G.A. says:

Someone needs to throw a rope around him before he descends to Glenn Beck levels.

What? He is going to become educated, cool and funny, tell the truth, and become the greatest investigative reporter in the known history of the universe?
Harry that would be to ascend. And I thought you was a writer or something, golly…..

Throwing a rope around him does bring up pleasant thoughts thou:)…..

  12. MrBlonde says:

I just don’t get why anyone watches either one of those asses, and why others have to point out their idiocies to those of us who have successfully avoided them.
