Demographic Trends Favor Republicans

Despite the conventional wisdom that emerging demographic trends would lead to the emergence of a Democratic majority, it appears that there's some good trends for the Republicans. Reyling on Clark Bensen's PoliData apportionment estimates, Michael Barone finds, in a piece entitled "Demographic Trends Could Make It Harder for Obama and Democrats,"  that several states are likely to gain House seats (and ...

100 Most Influential Slogans

The 100 Most Influential Taglines Since 1948. There's always room to quibble with this selection or that, but on the whole it's a pretty solid list. I probably wouldn't put "Got milk?" Number 1, for instance, but it obviously belongs in the Top 10. Speaking of which, here they are: Slogans: 1. Got milk? (1993) California Milk Processor Board 2. Don’t leave home without ...

Conservatives for Obama II

When I saw the headline "Hunter: This conservative activist is backing Obama" on memeorandum yesterday, I was intrigued.  Duncan Hunter, arguably the most conservative of the 2008 Republican presidential aspirants was endorsing a liberal Democrat?! When it turned out the "Hunter" in question was Larry Hunter, a fellow of whom I'd never previously heard, my interest waned.  After all, ...

Huzzah for Provincialism!

Today's Outrage of the Day on the right side of the blogosphere regards this latest bit from Barack Obama, regarding the need for our educational system to get better at teaching other languages. Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English -- they'll learn English ...

McCains Pay Back Taxes on Aunt’s Condo

The latest mini-scandal in Campaign 2008 is that the McCains have apparently not done a good job keeping track of their finances.   HuffPo has gotten 1420 Diggs at this writing with a story headlined "McCains Defaulted On Home Taxes For Last Four Years, Newsweek Reports." It promises "a highly embarrassing report."  Newsweek has delivered with "Mrs. McCain, San Diego County ...

SCOTUS Bans Death Penalty for Child Rape

The Supreme Court has ruled that raping a child is not sufficiently heinous a crime to warrant capital punishment. The Supreme Court on Wednesday outlawed executions of people convicted of raping a child. In a 5-4 vote, the court said the Louisiana law allowing the death penalty to be imposed in such cases violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. "The ...
