Kudos: while I thought of academia as soon as I saw those numbers (and before I read your post yesterday), it never occurred to me to try to turn it into a column.
Indeed, I did a quick calculation and the ration of applications to jobs in the Wal*Mart story was actually mroe favorable to the applicants that is the case in many academic jobs.
