TCS Daily – How Wal-Mart Is Like Academia

My latest piece for TCS Daily, “How Wal-Mart Is Like Academia,” is up. It’s an extended version of yesterday’s post on the subject.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

Kudos: while I thought of academia as soon as I saw those numbers (and before I read your post yesterday), it never occurred to me to try to turn it into a column.

Indeed, I did a quick calculation and the ration of applications to jobs in the Wal*Mart story was actually mroe favorable to the applicants that is the case in many academic jobs.

Your analysis more or less mimics Cary Nelson's Confession of a Tenured Radical.
