As someone who's come to baseball (and other sports besides soccer) relatively late in life, I find baseball immensely enjoyable in person (and even on the radio) but dull on TV, much more so than any other major sport. That might explain low TV ratings, but not low attendance.

Part of the problem may just be ticket prices. Last summer I and some friends paid $15 each for nosebleed seats at a meaningless August matchup at Comerica Park between the Tigers and someone else of no account that year (the Indians maybe?). You'd have to be pretty damn loyal to shell that out on a routine basis, especially if the best player on the field is Robert Fick (which, that day, it was, since the Indians stars, and by "stars" I mean Jim Thome, seemed to be taking the day off). For that, I could have great seats at a Memphis Redbirds AAA game and probably see better baseball.

Maybe baseball needs to rethink the model: set a token admission price for most of the seats ($5 or so) and make up the difference in concessions and the TV contract.

The other problem for baseball is that it has faild for the most part to bring in the kids. And with all of the other entertainment available for kids these days, I do not think kids will ever gravitate to baseball like my generation did.

More on Buzz
James Joyner at Outside the Beltway comments on my previous post. He thinks the game is boring: Major League Baseball is essentially the same game as it was in 1848. The only major change of which I'm aware is that...
