I watched Gallipoli (where the English just drank tea), Braveheart (ooh! those nasty English again, oh, and Braveheart was Robert the Bruce actually), Joan of Arc (screaming model who couldn't act)and Patriot(really nasty English there, not a loyalist in sight, although the whole of New York was), and finally I watched The Passion of Jesus Christ. I'm not the most educated guy in the world, but I refuse to believe that the English used to dress like that.

People who are making excuses and otherwise rationalizing Gibsons actions are simply off the mark here. If the man were not a virulent anti-semite than why did his remarks in Readers Digest circa 2004 very much donwnplay the carnage that resulted from the holocaust (11,000,000 dead)and why has he failed to refute in even the slighest way the many remarks made by his holocaust denying father? This type of overt bigotry or racism should not be tolerated no matter who the
perpatrator is.

"The Passion" was anti-Semitic only as much as the new testament was anti-Semitic.

I thought it was a remarkably accurate portrayal of the accounts given in the synoptic gospels. Of course, being Jewish, I consider those accounts to be themselves inaccurate and more than a little anti-Semitic. I won't belabor the details.

As far as Gibson goes, I don't think this matters. Last week, I had a few beers and went off for about two hours on the subject of object polymorphism and how anyone who deliberately hides a base class method should be taken out and shot.

It would be absolutely ludicrous to suggest that I was in any way serious; I just happened to have had a bad experience that day with exactly that thing. Someone hid a base class method, and consequently some code that should have worked didn't.

So I suspect Gibson had a bad experience which he attributed to some Jewish individual he perceives as being in power, then went out and had a few drinks. As a result, when he got angry, his frustration with this Jewish antagonist turned into an exaggerated tirade against Jews in general.

And it just seems moronic to pretend this is anything more than an angry drunk guy bitching about his day.

For all the justifiable outrage being directed Gibson's comments, that outrage seems untethered by comparison to the words and actions of others. The words "proportionate response" seem to come to mind here. For example, would somebody please care to tell me what the differences between what Gibson said while totally blitzed, and what Kofi Anan has been doing in the name of the United Nations, while supposedly stone cold sober? Anan's actions seem to me the embodiment of Gibson's words.

The Bible does not say that drinking alcohol is a sin but it certainly gives warning about the corrupting nature of it. This is a good example of booze at work. As a christian I won't judge Mr.Gibson,I will simply pray that he is delivered from the prison that is alcohol.

What Gibson said was horrible--but he asked for forgiveness, and we should grant it. He will have time to prove if his confession is genuine, until then we should be honest enough to admit that none of us is perfect.

On another note--to say that The Passion has anti-Semitic undertones is to say that the Gospel itself is anti-Semitic...it is not. It is philo-Semitic. And do any of you recall the various people who were saying pogroms would happen as a result of watching the film? Did you hear any apologies? Gibson endured much slander, and we should be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here. If he is anti-Semitic, it will come out again...and then we may say he better get things right with God in this life.

Even if he is an anti-Semite why would he say those things? Is he a total idiot? I don't even understand the comments.

I mean the battle in the middle east then would be, in Mel Gibson's eyes, one bad religion fighting another bad religion. But it was the Muslims that attacked Israel, so why doesn't he go on a rampage against the Muslims?

in vino, veritas applies for the most part, especially with non-humorous statements and actions. If this police report is accurate, Gibson is very likely an antisemite. The Passion of the Christ cannot be judged by Gibson's words, however.
