It compares via the fact that people of all stipes will glomb onto some belief system that makes them feel comfortable. At least, that is how the athiests would explain it.

Most of the people snickering about astrology over at RedState believe in virgin births, talking snakes, walking on water, and an improbable creation theory. One wonders if they are prepared to abandon their, shall we say, unscientific beliefs before throwing stones at Armstrong. This, at least, would be consistent with the beam/mote principle.
