I think you'd have to be pretty ignorant about Japan (and supremely ethnocentric) to find this funny. I heard similar stuff by Japanese who thought they were being funny about the West, when they were only being ignorant.

A minor correction: the raw fish (or raw anything) is called "sushimi." Sushi is best thought of as the Japanese equivalent of a sandwich, with rice replacing the bread.

I liked it. I also happen to like sushi.

I heard of a similar sketch that had Japanese talking about their opening a new restaurant. They had all the food critics there and a big opening crowd. Unfortunately, due to a snafu, the gas wasn't turned on in the kitchen so they couldn't cook the food. They go through the same sort of story of how they could trick the stupid Americans by serving them raw fish. The punchline was when they were asked what they called the food, someone else started feeding the dog from a bag labeled "sushi".

This video is at least three years old and surfaced in the US in a DVD put out by Res Magazine. I think Junji Kojima screened it at the Asian American Film Festival in San Francisco in the early 2000s.

A total blast from the past!
