Typo of the Day: Wide Latina

Matt Yglesias dashed off a quick tab dump post before calling it a night. It began, “It must take a wide Latina indeed to restrain herself from slugging some of these guys.”

Commenters are wondering if Matt is suggesting that soon-to-be Justice Sonia Sotomayor is fat.

I’m reminded of an infamous convocation speech a decade or so ago by the still-chancellor of the university at which I used to teach in which he noted that, because our Hispanic population was growing, the average dress size for women would soon be a size 14.  (He was also shocked to learn that the military was employing Muslim chaplains.)

Also, as a public service announcement, if you Google the phrase “wide Latina,” don’t click through.  Trust me on this.

You do realize that’s just going to cause us to go look, right ?

For anyone unfamiliar with Yglesias’s blog, what JJ is ribbing about here is that Yglesias can’t spell his way out of a paper bag.

Apparently, adequate spelling was not a Harvard prerequisite.

My guess is that he just doesn’t give a rat’s ass about proofreading.

But I actually did find “wide Latina” to be unintentionally classic.
