With all due respect to the "student" quoted: who gives a darn what he wants? From my own experience observing what my alma mater's President did, it is a job that requires enormous technical, people and political skills. Our President just left for a much bigger job (running the Smithsonian Institute) and left Georgia Tech in incomparably better shape than he found it. Fund raising (private & corporate), state gov relations, alumni relations, prima donna faculty relations (ugh!) - it will eat the unprepared ALIVE. Students are too ignorant of what really matters for their say to have any value to an institution that preceded them BY CENTURIES and will endure after they leave for (hopefully) even longer. Shut up and study!

Oh, and folks should revisit Dave Schuler's comment re the "comparable worth" argument for uni president salaries in the CEO salary cap thread below. Spot on, I think.

In particular, even at “state supported” public universities, they spend a great deal of time engaged in fundraising. Indeed, many are hired and fired based on their ability to bring in the cash to bolster endowments, capital building campaigns, and the like.

Yeah, as one of my profs in grad school once said, the job of the president of the university is to raise money, shut up, and go home.
