Stephen Green reminds us that all wars, even the much beloved WWII, involve “setbacks, shame, and blood.”

The difference between WWI and Gulf War II is that after WWII the sane people of the world decided some shit was just too horrible to allow even in war so they came up with the Geneva Convetion.
In Gulf War II the absurd people of this administration decided that adhering to the Geneva Convention was a lot of work and so they threw it out the window.

Update: Via e-mail, reader “Rocky” observes: “I’m not sure the sacrasm (”apparently, there’s a war on”) is merited here — we want the Iraqi people on our side. If they’re suffering, it doesn’t help us a bit, regardless of whether this is normal in the course of war. We should be rooting for the red cross, and the arrival of US Aid.” I agree wholeheartedly. But it is probably unreasonable to expect it to be able to happen while the battle still rages in that part of Iraq. Once it’s secured, I’m sure our forces will be stationed there to help the Red Cross operate safely.
