When Everyone Is Hitler

In an era where Bush = Hitler, Ashcroft = Hitler (Rumsfeld would equal Rommel, if the left had any clue who Rommel was), I suppose it should come as a relief that there are still some individuals who are denied the right to invoke Nazi Germany, even in ill-considered “fun”. The entire media kerfuffle over Prince Harry should seem bizarre in today’s atmosphere of rampant “Nazi-ism”, if it weren’t so completely predictable.

David Frum ;

Doesn’t CS Lewis somewhere have an observation that it’s a trick of the devil’s to persuade an age to go rushing to the gunwhales away from the sin to which they are in no danger of succumbing – tipping the boat into the sin from which they are in danger? (If anybody has the actual quote, please send it along so I can replace the unwieldy sentence above.) Europe in general and the UK in particular are in ZERO danger of succumbing to the menace of German Nazism. Meanwhile, genuine fascists dressed in keffiyehs are engaged in thuggery, subversion, assassination, and terrorism on European soil. Can’t we persuade the journalists busy inveighing against poor Harry to take on that cause instead?

Frankly, I personally find it much less disturbing that Harry wore a swastika to a party that his father, the future King Charles III, is reported to enjoy relaxing in Islamic bedouin robes at home.

Poor Harry might have saved himself a lot of trouble by adding a George W. Bush mask to the costume.

The outfit was SUPPOSED to be bizzare.
Such is the nature of humor; This is a point they will NEVER mention.

OTOH, I don't seem to recall the usual suspects having much problem with Whoopie Goldberg, or Margaret Cho.

That outfit wouldn't have been much of a big deal if he'd been joe blow. But unfortunatley he's Prince Harry of the House of Windsor, ex- Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Remember the name change happened during the unpleasantness of 1914-18. November 11 is still a big deal in the UK, just go and witness the ceremony every year at the Cenotaph. For a member of the royal family to despoil the memory of the British subjects who died fighting Nazism is rightfully a scandal there. The US equivalent is to have the Bush twins show up on Halloween wearing Klan outfits.

I'm not sure why David Frum finds it disturbing that Prince Charles wears bedouin robes at home. Are all Bedouins our enemies, David?

What Harry did was stupid, and he deserved to get his ears boxed. But enough is enough. Even if he's a prince, he's also a kid.

The media, especially in Britain, attack the royals because it's easy, it's politically correct, and people like to read it.

They don't attack extremist Islamists because they have to work harder to get the information, it's decidedly not politically correct, and people would rather keep their heads in the sand than read about hard reality.

Such is life.

I don't get this connection between this incident and Islamist terrorism. As my British friends keep pointing out, terrorism is nothing new to Brits. We didn't seem to make a big fuss about the IRA when they were blowing up British soldiers and civilians, and in fact gave them sanctuary in the US, which irked the Brits to no end. We seem to have waken up to the danger of international terrorism only after 9/11. I don't think the Brits need a lecture on this from us.
