<blockquote>Who’s preventing the MSM from showing our soldier’s flag-draped caskets?</blockquote>

Proof positive that no one gives a rat's ass unless it reflects badly on the adminstration.

People like this only give a damn when it suits their political purposes. Never mind about SOLDIERS, their STORIES, their FAMILIES, their HEROISM. Let's see them CASKETS!

I don't agree with the ban, but I understand, as a military wife and Army veteran, why DoD wants to prevent returning caskets from being turned into a media circus.

So, it's the military and government's fault that the public cares more about Britney Spears than SFC Paul Ray Smith?

Bullshit.

The stories are out there. I read them everyday. I forward them to my friends. I print them out. I read their heart-warming stories on the America-Supports-You website (that the government is pushing all over the place, but no one in the MSM seems to have picked up on). I hang pictures of these heroes in my cube at work (SFC Smith's photo is smiling at me right now). I watch them on C-SPAN. I visit them at Walter Reed. The military is doing all it can to get the word out. You cannot blame them if the MSM and the average Joe doesn't give a damn.

You first have to actually GIVE a rat's ass.

Then you have to be paying attention.

Then you have to be willing to watch an interview with them on C-SPAN, as opposed to watching some ridiculous Barbara Walter's interview with some slutty little twit who makes millions, yet contributes nothing of any value, really, to American society.

I could count a hundred different ways the military and the government are trying to get the Army's story out on the street.

And then I could count 200 ways the public and MSM are resisting it, in favor of the low-brow, pop culture entertainment industry.

If President Bush wished to play up particular soldiers rather than the overall effort made by the military, he certainly could. He could call a press conference for every time he grants the top honors, or bring up their names in high profile speeches, or put a press release on the front page of whitehouse.gov. He makes choices about how to talk about the war on terror all the time; in fact, he recently decided to ignore some of his advisors' recommendation by continuing to call it the "war on terror" rather than "global battle against extremism."

It's not like the individual heroism of specific men and women either burnishes or despoils the president's reputation, unless you wish to argue that he somehow is the one actually fighting this war. When I first saw the article, I immediately thought, "The two names we've heard a lot were <a href="http://bertrandrussell.blogspot.com/2003/04/uh-oh-counterintuitively-we-had-better.html" rel="nofollow">Jessica Lynch</a> and <a href="http://bertrandrussell.blogspot.com/2004/12/confusing-news-washington-post-seems.html" rel="nofollow">Pat Tillman</a>, and both of those stories ended up being much more complicated than the military's initial depiction."

It's not quoted in the post above, but the article points this out as well. The mainstream media spread the stories about those two heroes very well -- and then did an equally good job when they had to tell the story with the details the military initially didn't release.

I think the article is correct in depicting this as a choice made by the president and the military, not by the media. The media loves celebrities, loves having people to put on TV and whose faces on magazines will sell copies.

Try searching whitehouse.gov for a mention of Sgt. Hester -- I found nothing, and you can hardly call that a MSM, Bush-hating outlet.

To the MSM and the left, the only heroes in America today are the "brave souls" who dare speak out and blame America for everyones troubles

Excellent Question! My theory is that the MSM is doing its dead-level best to downplay competence, heroism, and successes of our magnificant military men and women because they hate GWB so much. What a bunch of maroons. The American people are determined to honor and support our military, regardless of the MSM. We love our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, and will not be swayed by antiwar propaganda.

Yes, McGehee you are right. Really sleazy to take a topic like this and turn it into the left's usual Bush-bash.

I have been routinely tracking our heroes, and the old media ignores them. I've set up a web site for them, <a href="http://simmins.org/Blog/american_heroes.html" rel="nofollow">American Heroes</a> and all this week I am featuring them on my blog, as well. It's been somewhat disheartening to search for stories about these men and women and find nothing but the military press release.

Paul Smith's stand was worthy of Greek legend. Mark Mitchell scaled a wall in Afghanistan using a borrowed turban to rescue a captured CIA agent. Teresa Broadwell was so short she stood on tip toe to fire her weapon but she held off an ambush until help arrived. Leigh Ann Hester went from running a small shoe store to assaulting an entrenched enemy with one other soldier.

There are a lot of heroes, but no one to print their stories.

THE reason many have not read about our heroes has little to do with the reasons proposed by Cave at the NYT's. The reason is because the leading media, including of course its leader the NYT's, have ignored the stories of heroism. For important links, see http://www.antimedia.us/posts/1123436490.shtml .

One point that Mr Cave's interesting article doesn't examine is that the Bush WhiteHouse climbed to success on the necks of former war heroes. This administration of shirkers and draft dodgers scored their biggest victories by slinging mud on the reputations of genuine heroes like John McCain and John Kerry. Is it any wonder that Mr Bush avoids the comparisons?
