WWII PARALLELS
Michael Dobbs of The Washington Post argues that there are parallels between today’s Bush-Blair meeting on the impending war with Saddam and the pre-WWII dialogues between Churchill and FDR on Hitler. In this case, the relationship is reversed, in that Churchill was pushing a reluctant FDR into action against the strong opposition of the American public. Not to mention the fact that Saddam isn’t exactly Hitler. Yes, both were/are rather despicable tyrannts willing to kill their own citizens to achieve their political aims. But Saddam doesn’t appear ready to invade Poland, let alone France. (Although, in another interesting case of deja vu, the French are once again unwilling to fight.)
