Correction of the Day

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated whom Newt Gingrich is said to have asked for an "open marriage." It was an ex-wife, not his current wife.

NYT offers the following correction at the end of their story “Gingrich Threatens to Skip Debates if Audiences Can’t Participate.”

Well, not yet. As far as we know.

  1. Well, not yet. As far as we know.

His previous marriages both lasted 20 years, so Callista shouldn’t start worrying until about 2018 or so. She may want to start keeping a close eye on who her husband’s aides are right about now, though.

  2. In 2018 Newt will be something approaching 74 years old. Please let there be no “open marriages” to think about at that point.

More striking than the correction is the actual story–Newt is threatening to pick up his toys and go home if he doesn’t get his way about allowing the crowd to participate in the debates. The so-called “Great Debater” of the Republican party doesn’t want to debate unless he can get applause for his victim of the media act and random take downs of black moderators.

In other words, Newt can only win the debates if he has the crowd behind him to fire him up and vice versa. If debating means responding to the moderators or the other candidates in a sane, rational matter, where he might have to wrangle a fact or two rather than appealing to raw emotion, Newt loses.

@Fiona: It’s because Newt is like that Star Trek energy creature that fed on anger and hate.

Ha! Me thinks that creature gave the State of the Unions speech last nite…..

A more classic case of projection, I can not recall.

Callista has nothing to worry about. Well except for her ears meeting at the back of her head.

That gal has had some serious work done.
