GOP Congressman: Evolution And The Big Bang Theory Come From The Pit Of Hell

Ladies and Gentlemen, Congresman Paul Broun of Georgia:

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) tore into scientists as tools of the devil in a speech at the Liberty Baptist Church Sportsman’s Banquet last month.

“All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell,” Broun said. “And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”

According to Broun, the scientific plot was primarily concerned with hiding the true age of the Earth. Broun serves on the House Science Committee, whichcame under scrutiny recently after another one of its Republican members, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), suggested that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses against pregnancy.

“You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth,” he said. “I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says.”

Here’s the video:

Based on this, I would not want to be one of Dr. Broun’s patients. By the way, Congressman Broun is a member of the House Science Committee.

    The stupid. It hurts.

  2. Murray says:

    He’s got data proving Earth is only approx 9000 years old? Why doesn’t he share it with us?

    I guess it’s locked in the same drawer as the results of The Donald’s investigation in Hawaii and they lost the key.

    I don’t know if I should laugh or weep.

  3. john personna says:

    The important thing to understand is that this is not a stand-out opinion, and it is not divorced from the closed conservative information feedback loop.

    This is a fundamental problem of education. When people are taught from a young age that they can reject things which do not confirm their values, they will again and again.

    This is why there was an instant cry of manipulation on the jobs number, and not even a slow build of skepticism. Rejection is ready to go.

    This is also why I linked to the “states which teach evolution” map earlier. It is a real forward risk, when we teach another generation that they can believe what they want.

  4. JKB says:

    Oh relax, our people in Congress believe in all kinds of mythology and failed theories, Keynesianism, marxism, etc. Why everyone freaks out over a little creationism, I don’t know. We hire these guys and gals for the House, the Senate even the White House for their patter selling a bigger and better deal. As we’ve seen, it is far worse for them to believe failed economic and political theories. Belief in creationism is a serious deficit if you are working in genetics not Congress.

  5. Fiona says:

    This guy is on the Science Committee and apparently doesn’t believe in science. Gaah!

  6. Hal 10000 says:

    You know, I’m a scientist. I’m even an astronomer, so I deal with the age of the Universe all the time. And I have never gotten those smoking memos from Satan telling me what religion-destroying secular humanist Islamist stuff I’m supposed to be spewing this week. What’s my problem? Do people not think I’m fun? That’s it, isn’t it. I never get the *cool* memos.

  7. stonetools says:

    Yet another reason why we should push for a Democratic house. Tea Party delanda est!!

  8. Herb says:

    @JKB:

    “Belief in creationism is a serious deficit if you are working in genetics not Congress.”

    You’re half-right. Congress would be well-served by the absence of such clowns. We should not accept a Congress that gives equal time to every half-baked ideology.

    And that’s the thing about Creationism. It’s a half-baked ideology that rejects mountains of contradictory evidence in favor of an unproven, frankly dubious idea: that the Bible is 100% true. Religious belief is sufficiently diverse in this country that one cannot assume every religious person holds the Bible inerrant to the same degree.

  9. john personna says:

    @Hal 10000:

    Get thee behind me!

  10. Tillman says:

    Before long, all of our satirists, farcicists, and parodists are going to be on the streets. There’s no work left: Reality has gobbled it all up. Damn monopolies.

    In fact, john, I’m pasting this on FB right now. Hope you don’t mind… I’ll shared the shrieking from my RW friends.

  13. john personna says:

    no problem, enjoy

  14. Barry says:

    @JKB: dumb*fck.

  15. superdestroyer says:

    Once again, what any Republican says is applied to all Republicans but what a Democrat says is never applied to any other Democrat.

  16. Anderson says:

    “Science Committee” to the GOP is like a “Cancer League” – a noun devoted to eradicating an adjective.

  17. Herb says:

    @superdestroyer:

    Once again, what any Republican says is applied to all Republicans but what a Democrat says is never applied to any other Democrat.

    Can’t tell if you’re complaining about a double standard….or calling for one.

  18. @JKB:

    marxism

    Find me one actual Marxist in the Congress. Please–I would really like to see who you pick,.

    And I would like to see who and why you say this. I would also like you to explain which strand of Marxism (there are several) you think said person adheres to.

    At a minimum I would love to hear your definition of “marxism.”

  19. al-Ameda says:

    @JKB:

    Oh relax, our people in Congress believe in all kinds of mythology and failed theories, Keynesianism, marxism, etc.

    There are no “Marxists” in our Congress.

    As for Keynesianism, well, Keynes believed that in times of economic expansion and growth, that we should not run deficits, and that in difficult times we should take actions to stimulate the economy – that is a hardly a failed idea.

  20. superdestroyer says:

    @Herb:

    There is no reason for the Republicans to complain, they know that a double standard exists and that the double standard puts them at a huge disadvantage.

    Every Republican should have realize years ago that everything they ever wrote, ever said, or was said in their presence will eventaully become public and will be used to embarass them. Anyone who wants to be in politics must have the discipline to be guarded in everything they say, write, or do. Republicans should also understand that the Democrats are not held to the same standard and that there is nothing that they can do about it.

    Look at how this week, Democrats will be in front of the Supreme Court trying to justify state sanctioned bigotry and discrimination in the form of separate and unequal college admission standards for blacks and Hispanics. Yet, no one will point out how racism the Democrats are and how they are massive hypocrites for wanting to deny due process to poor and middle class whites.

  21. john personna says:

    @Steven L. Taylor, @al-Ameda:

    It is true that “Keynesianism” has not been disproved by data. The broad umbrella is mostly true under most circumstances, which is as much as you can ask of any “ism.”

  22. john personna says:

    @superdestroyer:

    What a horrible non-defense. How far down the liberal side of the house would you have to look to find something as monumentally reality-denying as Rep. Broun’s claim?

    Seriously. What have you got?

  23. GENE HAUBER says:

    HEY MURRAY,

    DON’T DO EITHER ONE……JUST CHECK OUT HIS CLAIM INDEPENDENTLY OF DARWINISTS.
    CARBON DATING IS REALLY FLAWED BEYOND 90,000 YEARS AND ONLY, ONLY WITH ROCKS.

    DARWINISM’S ONLY GOAL IS TO FIND SOME WAY TO “PROVE” THAT GOD DOES NOT EXIST.
    SO FAR ITS FAILED ON EVERY POINT.
    DON’T STAY STUPID ALL YOUR LIFE…..FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF IF YOU ARE NOT INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST.
    YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO SEE THAT A SUPERIOR INTELLECT CREATED THE WORLD.

  24. Herb says:

    @superdestroyer:

    “Look at how this week, Democrats will be in front of the Supreme Court trying to justify state sanctioned bigotry and discrimination in the form of separate and unequal college admission standards for blacks and Hispanics.”

    I knew there was an ax to grind in there somewhere……..and surprise, surprise, it’s racial.

    Yet, no one will point out how racism the Democrats

    No one? You just did it.

    You’re making the classic mistake of interpreting an unconvincing argument for an unheard one.

  25. superdestroyer says:

    @john personna:

    Virtually every Democrat claims that all students can learn Algebra (or Calculus, physics, or a foreign language) if enough money in spent on education. Yet, there is no evidence that increasing spending actually improved educational outcomes.

    Now what is more important to policy and governance: what a politician believes about evolution or what a politician believes about educational statistics?

  26. superdestroyer says:

    @Herb:

    Please point to PBS, NPR, the boardcast networks, CNN, the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, or MSNBC saying anything bad about affirmative action. If you look at Soledad Obrien on CNN, she might as well be the official spokesperson for separate and unequal treatment.

  27. superdestroyer says:

    @Herb:

    You might also want to look at how the supreme court rules in Gratz Vs. Bollinger. The liberal members of the Suprme Court could not bring themselves to say that having a documented separate and equal standard for college admission was wrong. Yet, no one ever points out how Democrats seem to tolerate racist as long as the racist promote discriminating against whites (and Asians).

  28. john personna says:

    @superdestroyer:

    That is an extremely diffuse complaint. I’m sure there is too little school funding some places, too much in other places, and “Goldilocks” funding in others.

    That is nothing like an insistence on an earth created 10,000 years after humans perfected twisted rope.

  29. GENE HAUBER says:

    @dennis: @Barry:
    HEY BARRY……IT’S ONLY FOUR LETTERS AND YOU SPELLED IT WRONG.
    THAT’S WHAT EVOLUTION DOES TO YOU ……..IT MAKES YOU LEES FIT TO SURVIVE.

  30. GENE HAUBER says:

    @JoshB:
    YOU MUST KNOW!

  31. GENE HAUBER says:

    @JKB:
    EVOLUTION DEFIES BOTH LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS, THE 1ST AND THE 2ND.
    THE BIG BANG WOULD HAVE PRODUCED SUCH TREMENDOUS HEAT THAT NOTHING WOULD HAVE SURVIVED AND THEREFORE DEFIES ALSO THE LAW OF BIOGENESIS.
    TO STUDY GENETICS WITHOUT BELIEVING IN A CREATOR IS LIKE TRYING TO WORK A PUZZLE IN PITCH BLACK DARKNESS.

  32. JKB says:

    @john personna: This is a fundamental problem of education. When people are taught from a young age that they can reject things which do not confirm their values, they will again and again.

    Careful, you are undermining the tenets of modern public education as provided by Liberal educators.

  33. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Fiona:
    HERE’S A FLASH FOR YOU FIONA.
    THERE IS AS MUCH SCIENCE IN EVOLUTION AS THERE IS IN THE GLOBAL WARMING THEORY…..NONE!

    WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE STILL IN THEIR STAGE BETWEEN AMOEBA AND MADONNA FOR EXAMPLE.
    WHEN A SPECIES ‘EVOLVES” ENVIRONMENTALLY, IT DIMINISHES ITS CHANCE OF SURVIVAL…………..BLIND FISH LIVING IN CAVERNS OR DEEP IN THE OCEAN WOULD QUICKLY BE DEVOURED BY PREDATORS OUT OF THEIR NATURAL REALM.
    DOVES RAISED IN CAPTIVITY AND RELEASED DURING CEREMONIES ARE QUICKLY KILLED BY PREDATORS….NO SURVIVAL SKILLS.

  34. george says:

    @GENE HAUBER:

    EVOLUTION DEFIES BOTH LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS, THE 1ST AND THE 2ND.

    I assume you’re a troll, because even the creationists I know are well aware that it defies neither. That, or you’re fundamentally unable to understand the concept of a close system? In case you’re not a troll, pick up a good book on thermodynamics, such as perhaps Fermi’s book (he was a Nobel Prize winner in physics and his book is still recommended as extra reading in undergrad physics courses), you’ll quickly understand why those claims are nonsense. And actually maybe get some idea of just what the 1st and 2nd laws actually state – they’re quite more limited in their claims than people who’ve never studied them think.

    Though on reflection, I’m still thinking you’re doing a parody.

  35. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Hal 10000: HUH??

  36. Herb says:

    @superdestroyer:

    “Please point to PBS, NPR, the boardcast networks, CNN, the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, or MSNBC saying anything bad about affirmative action.”

    Yeah, I’ll get right on that….

    Sheesh.

  37. GENE HAUBER says:

    @stonetools: BEFORE NOV 2010 YOU HAD A DEM PRESIDENT, A DEM SENATE AND A DEM HOUSE AND WHAT DID IT DO FOR YOU?
    STILL GOT A JOB??

  38. GENE HAUBER says:

    @superdestroyer: TRUE, TRUE, TRUE.

  39. GENE HAUBER says:
  40. Martin Godsy says:

    Excuse me, the bible is not a book of scientific reference. That’s what we keep telling those creationist nimrods who insist on using it as such.

  41. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Steven L. Taylor: PICK ANY DEMOCRAT…..START WITH BERNIE SANDERS.
    I CAN’T ARGUE NUANCES AND DEFINITIONS WITH YOU, YOU’RE WAY TOO SMART FOR ME .WHOEVER WANTS TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR ENDS BY USING OTHER PEOPLES MONEY IS A MARXIST, LIBTARD, SOCIALIST , COMMUNIST ANY MENBER OF THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS, OBAMA AND HIS WIFE. THAT SHOULD HAVE YOUR MARXIST IN THERE SOMEWHERE DUDE.

  42. GENE HAUBER says:

    WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON?

  43. GENE HAUBER says:

    To borrow a meme,

    “Go Home GENE, you’re drunk.”

  45. mattb says:

    Down voting Gene… not for the idiocy in his comments — which is plentiful — but for the continued abuse of all caps.

  46. Herb says:

    @GENE HAUBER: Yeah, GENE. Take a look around. See anyone else typing in ALL CAPS? See anyone else posting every snarky thing that comes into their head?

    Some free advice: When you come into an unfamiliar room, look around, see how other people are acting. Comport yourself accordingly.

  47. GENE HAUBER says:

    @superdestroyer: THE DEMS CONSTANTLY PROMOTE CONFLICT BETWEEN BLACKS AND WHITES. ITS A TOOL TO BUY THEM VOTES, BUT WHAT HAS ONE, JUST ONE, BLACK LEADER EVER DONE FOR HIS COMMUNITY, I.E. THE BLACK PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY??.

  48. GENE HAUBER says:

    @JKB: TRUE, TRUE, TRUE

  49. JKB says:

    @Steven L. Taylor:

    Can you demonstrate that no one in Congress subscribes to the tenets and theories of Marx in any intensity? If you refer to my comment, you’ll see I said mythologies and failed theories. I made no assertions of overwhelming belief to the point that of definition.

    I did not delve deeply into Marxism as I quickly realized it went against human nature and therefore was doomed to failure. I really don’t understand the continuing teaching of such a failed theory in the same way I wouldn’t understand, down in the physics or chemistry departments, them teaching alchemy.

  50. GENE HAUBER says:

    @george: NO PARODY…..AND DON’T FORGET THAT YASSER ARAFAT AND OBAMA BOTH HAVE NOBELS FOR PEACE….THATS A LAUGH.
    NOBELS GO TO THE PROGRESSIVES AND NO ONE ELSE

  51. Herb says:

    @JKB:

    “Can you demonstrate that no one in Congress subscribes to the tenets and theories of Marx in any intensity?”

    That’s impossible. You can’t prove a negative.

    How about you provide us the names of the Marxists in Congress? If you can’t….you can always admit you were just blowing smoke. We will lose no esteem for you, I promise.

  52. Andrew E. says:

    @JKB: failed theories like, what, Trickle-Down economics? Libertarianism?

    And say hello to your fellow traveler GENE HAUBER! I’m sure you two can compare notes if you can just get him to stop shouting.

  53. fsm_47 says:

    The Big Bang is biblical. It goes along with Genesis. Darwinistic macro evolution is another issue. Evolution within species is easily proven. Evolution between species is another matter. Fossil evidence of cross species evolution (that cockroach becoming a giraffe) has never been shown except to the non-skeptical Darwinists inferring what isn’t there. DNA and how it changes (and how it doesn’t change) has thrown a big wrench in what was and IS a Theory. I think I will hang with someone like Einstein as to whether there was an Intelligent Design that gave us what we see daily.

  54. GENE HAUBER says:
  55. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Herb: I HAVE BEEN IN A LOT OF UNFAMILIAR ROOMS IN MY LIFE.

    I DON’T EVER WANT TO “FIT IN”….I’D RATHER STAND OUT, AT LEAST IN THIS CROWD.

  56. CSK says:

    This guy is a medical doctor. A medical doctor. He thinks embryology is a lie? A lie? Embryology is the study of the development of the fertilized ovum/embryo/fetus from conception to birth. What part of that is a lie? Does he think when a child is conceived, the child weighs, oh, say, eight pounds, is fully formed, and just hangs out in mom’s uterus for the next nine months for the free food?

    What part of this process is a lie?

  57. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Herb: BETWEEN YOU AND MATT I HAVE BEEN CHASTISED FOR MY CAPS.
    MAYBE I WOULD APOLOGIZE IF I THOUGHT I WAS COMMITTING A CRIME, IT IS BECAUSE I AM HARD OF HEARING FROM 20 YEARS OF NAVAL AIRCRAFT STILL RUNNING IN MY EARS.
    I HAVE TO SHOUT JUST TO HEAR MYSELF THINK. LOL
    GET YOURSELVES A LIFE GUYS!!!

    JUST AS AN ASIDE TO ALL YOU DARWINISTS……FRANCIS CRICK, THE DISCOVERER OF DNA IS AN ATHEIST(AVOWED). SOME DAY CRICK IS GOING TO MEET THE GUY THAT PUT THE DNA IN US.
    IT WON’T BE A GOOD DAY FOR HIM……I’M JUST SAYEN’.

  58. CSK says:

    It has to be said: That picture would be a primo choice for Mr. Dill’s Caption Contest.

  59. GENE HAUBER says:

    @fsm_47: WRONG, WRONG, WRONG…………THE BIG BANG IS NOT, REPEAT NOT BIBLICAL.
    GENESIS, FIRST COUPLE OF LINES.

  60. GENE HAUBER says:

    @CSK: EMBRYOLOGY IS NOT A LIE…………………JUST DARWINS.
    HIS EMBRYOLOGY BOARD WAS FAKED TO COMPLY WITH HIS THEORY WHICH IS…..WRONG.

  61. GENE HAUBER says:

    @GENE HAUBER: DARWINS THEORY IS NOT JUST WRONG IT IS A LIE AND A HOAX PERPETRATED UPON THE MOST GULLIBLE AND THOSE MOST POORLY SERVED BY THEIR EDUCATION..

  62. GENE HAUBER says:

    @Andrew E.: ANDREW YOU MUST LOVE THE NANNY STATE.
    WHY?
    DOES IT TAKE CARE OF ALL YOUR NEEDS? OBAMA IS COMING UP FOR RE-EL. GO FOR IT!

    I HATE THE NANNY STATE AND I TAKE CARE OF ALL OF MY NEEDS AND THOSE OF MY FAMILY…..NOT ONE PENNY EVER OF GOVERNMENT HELP.

  63. GENE HAUBER says:

    @fsm_47: FSM, EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST LINE, EVERYTHING ELSE YOU SAID I AGREE WITH, HANG IN THERE WITH THIS CROWD……DON’T BE LOSEN’ YOUR RELIGION!

  64. CSK says:

    @GENE HAUBER:

    Um, Gene, Broun said that the embryology he was taught in medical school was a lie. I gave you the definition of embryology. It’s the development of the fetus. What is the problem with this?

  65. Herb says:

    @GENE HAUBER:

    “I DON’T EVER WANT TO “FIT IN”….I’D RATHER STAND OUT, AT LEAST IN THIS CROWD.”

    You didn’t actually have to type that out. It’s quite obvious.

  66. Andrew E. says:

    @GENE HAUBER: Assuming that you’re alluding to Libertarianism, bully for you, but I’d love to hear how you reconcile the Atheistic, completely human-centered philosophy of Objectivism with the teachings of Christianity.

    Also thank you for your service to this country but I’m curious: now that you’re no longer in American Armed Services, how are your medical bills paid for?

  67. swbarnes2 says:

    But remember, James Joyner is going to fix all of this from the inside by supporting Republican politicians with his votes, so they can appoint their best and brightest to places where their wonderful understanding of reality can have the most impact.

    Let’s sum up…in the last two days, we have this republican disavowing just about every field of science, another Republican saying that slavery was great for black people, and happily, a scheme of Republicans to keep legitimate minority voters from voting is overturned. Next week, it will be three different things, and the week after that three more things, and the week after that three more things.

    And James self-identifies as part of this party and supports it with his votes because of…?

    I think I know the answer, and it isn’t pretty, but I would love to see the piles of awesome Republican policies that he believes justifies this choice.

  68. OzarkHillbilly says:

    This thread could have been limited to a dozen or so…. JKB, GA, Eric, Jan, a few trolls, and some masturbation…. But noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo……. you all had to argue with them, knowing they would not listen to reason.

    Maybe I am calling the wrong people idiots.

  69. Doofensmirf says:

    @superdestroyer: @superdestroyer:
    so it seems…gets old after awhile, doesn’t it? I would believe that both parties have “Uncle Festers” that they really should keep tucked away in the attic – in the case of the Democrats it would be Joe Biden…LOL

  70. Zack says:

    @john personna: @CSK: what he was saying is that what he was taught about embryology was a lie. You know, the part about how a fetus isn’t a human until it exits the womb. That’s what he was saying. But of course he’s just an idiot. Understand the context. This is just like the 47% comment. All taken out of context.

  71. @JKB:

    Can you demonstrate that no one in Congress subscribes to the tenets and theories of Marx in any intensity?

    Yes, because none of them do. Probably the most leftist member of the Congress, the aforementioned Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, is not a Marxist.

    BTW: this is one of those assertion that requires positive proof on your part, not me describing the ideological predilections of the whole of Congress.

    I made no assertions of overwhelming belief to the point that of definition.

    You asserted that there were believers in Marxism in Congress. If you are going to make such assertions, you would think that you would have someone in mind.

    I did not delve deeply into Marxism as I quickly realized it went against human nature and therefore was doomed to failure. I really don’t understand the continuing teaching of such a failed theory in the same way I wouldn’t understand, down in the physics or chemistry departments, them teaching alchemy.

    Ah. So, you don’t know what you are talking about on this subject. As such, I would recommend not making claims about something.

    This is a pet peeve of mine. People throw around a variety of words, including Marxism, communism, socialism, and fascism, and yet they haven’t a real clue as to what they mean.

    And in regards to your analogy: I am not a chemist, but if a member of Congress was professing belief in alchemy, or basing policy thereon, I am pretty sure I could identify said person. And certainly, if I made a claim that members of congress believed in alchemy, I would be prepared to say who the individual was.

  72. Kylopod says:

    > there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth

    I never knew that a physician was a type of scientist, let alone one qualified to determine the age of the earth. (What does he do, give a prostate exam to a volcano?) Guess you learn something new each day.

  77. @GENE HAUBER:

    Let me politely ask that you stop typing in all caps. It really is the visual representation of shouting and it is, to my mind, impolite.

  78. GENE HAUBER says:
