How About We Actually Listen To The People Behind Park 51 ?

Daisy Khan, the wife of Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, and one of the people behind the project to construct an Islamic Community Center and mosque in a location two blocks from the site of the September 11th attacks appeared on ABC’s This Week this morning to discuss the project and the firestorm that has erupted around it:

After watching this, the first thing that struck me is that the project owners should’ve been doing interviews like this week ago rather than ceding the ground to demagogues like Gingrich and Palin.

Update: Along the same lines there’s an interesting profile of Imam Rauf himself in today’s New York Times. Go read it.

  1. But Doug, haven’t you been listening? You can’t trust these people based on what they say because they all have a secret plan to take over the world and they are allowed to lie and trick us all!

(And in case it is lost on someone, apply /sarcasm tags to the above)

  2. Tim says:

Perhaps you are not bright enough to comprehend the tactic of taqiyya. Okay, look it up.

  3. That didn’t take long. did it?

  4. Jason says:

“they all have a secret plan to take over the world and they are allowed to lie and trick us all!”

Prof., I think you got it.

I wouldn’t like to compare reading list with you, or debate a general topic … I know my limits..but let me add this for your sake, there is a ton of resources written by Muslim Islamic revolutionaries who say exactly that. But unlike you, they are dead serious and mean it.

Ever read any of Bernard Lewis’ stuff? How about the kind of Islam in France, Denmark, Italy, Spain?

  5. Zelsdorf Ragshaft III says:

Jason, Tim, you cannot get through to these people. They are stuck on stupid.

  6. Mark says:

It is so heartening to see that the spirit and courage of Neville Chamberlain lives on! I find it amazing that educated people can take time to study a concept, in this case Islam, read its foundational beliefs as explained in the Qur’an, and still respond sarcastically when one of the basics of that belief structure are used as a part of the argument. Certainly you have studied? Of course Daisy Khan is “reasonable”. So was Tariq Aziz. If she and her husband are so “reasonable” and so concerned that they provide a bridge for Muslims and foster healing…how about they take, say, $75 million of the $100 million the building is projected to cost and create a trust fund for the recipients and beneficiaries of the Muslim Flight School Outreach Program as demonstrated on September 11, 2001. It could be for medical expenses, scholarships, etc., but it would be entirely for the benefit of the victims and families. Then, take the remaining money and invest it in the nearest existing Mosque in the general area and go to work. Now how reasonable would that be? Think it might happen? Me either! We are making progress! Zel, Jason, Tim…hang in there!

  7. Ramki says:

Mark, have you read the Qur’an?

  8. Brian Knapp says:

Perhaps you are not bright enough to comprehend the tactic of taqiyya.

Hahaha! Dr. T, this could become a drinking game.

  9. @Brian: Indeed, although if it were, we’d all be passed-out drunk.

  10. Mark says:

    Ramki,
I have not read it cover to cover. In the past two years I have read the Bible completely, and have read segments of the Qur’an.
