Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, the Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee, announced this morning that he has scheduled the confirmation hearings for Elena Kagan, the Supreme Court nominee, to begin on June 28.

In his statement, the senator said: “Last year, we proceeded with the hearing on the nomination of Justice Sotomayor 48 days after she was designated. Senate Republicans said that hearing was fair, and was conducted fairly. This year, I am scheduling the hearing to start 49 days after the nomination was announced.”

Mr. Leahy also noted the timeline for confirmation of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. Both Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Roberts were confirmed 72 days after their nominations were announced, he said.

Seventy two days from May 10th, when Kagan’s nomination was announced, is July 21st, which seems like an easily achievable target under the circumstances.

In the meantime, the Committee also released Elena Kagan’s responses to the questionnaire provided to nominees, which you can read in all its 202-page glory below the fold, should you choose.
