Majority Of Americans Support START Treaty
As the Senate nears a crucial vote over a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia, according to a new national poll nearly three-quarters of all Americans say senators should approve the accord.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday also indicates that a majority says that Moscow would live up to its obligations if the START treaty is approved.
Seventy-three percent of people questioned in the poll say the Senate should approve the nuclear treaty, with 24 percent saying senators should reject the accord.
The numbers are in-line with an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released last week.According to the CNN survey, 86 percent of Democrats and 75 percent of independent voters say that lawmakers should approve the START treaty. Fifty percent of Republicans say the accord should be approved, with 45 percent saying senators should reject the treaty.
So essentially what you’re seeing in the GOP opposition to the treaty is little more than Senators with national ambitions playing to the party’s base.
What you mean to say is they support what they have been told the Start Treaty says. No one knows as it has not been debated in the Senate. Why is it Dougie you want to give away a technological advantage to a potential enemy? There must be a reason. I don’t give a damn about what undercover communist say is in the treaty. It is important to note the Russian can walk away from it if we advance our technology in the area of missle defense. When you fight, if you have ever fought, did you tie one hand behind you? Looking at your picture, you did not fight, you cried and begged.
Hey Zelsdorf (nice handle), did you know Americans can back out the treaty if the Russians advance their technology? That’s the way a treaty works. The fact that the Senate vote was overwhelmingly in favor, and that most of the military leadership, and all of the ex-Secretaries of State approve the treaty, tells me you don’t really understand much. Good luck with the research you will no doubt embark on.
