Maryland Congressman Wayne Gilchrest Detained

Maryland Congressman Wayne Gilchrest Detained

Maryland Congressman Wayne Gilchrest is free again, after police in Queen Anne’s County detained him for questioning. The First District representative had been at a new irrigation site in Centreville with another man, when police say they got a report of possible trespassers. Gilchrest told police he had permission to look over the property because he is concerned about potential pollution problems there.

Gilcrest is a Republican representing the 1st District. The details are sufficiently sketchy that I don’t know what to make of this.

My pocket version of the Constitution is in my other suit, but isn’t there something in there about not detaining representatives, or is that only if they are on their way to do business on the Hill?

    Article I Section. 6. Clause 1:

“The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, beprivileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”

I don’t think this protects them if they’re skulking around Maryland.

Who was the other man? I hear Gilchrest’s buddy Don Sherwood has lots of “acquaintances” in Maryland!

The Congressman was checking on enviromental crimes by the town of Centreville. The other man was Sveinn Storm a local man that lives in the town. Read the paper….. it’s all there.
