Michele Bachmann: 9/11 And Benghazi Were “God’s Judgment”

Michele Bachmann thinks she’s found the root cause of terrorism:

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) continued to promote a right-wing Sept. 11 “National Day of Prayer and Fasting” on Thursday, telling an audience gathered at a Capitol Hill event that such actions were necessary because “judgment” had been passed down by God on that day in both 2001 and 2012.

“Our nation has seen judgment not once but twice on September 11 and that’s why we’re going to have ‘9-11 Pray’ on that day,” she said at an event called “Washington: A Man of Prayer,” according to Right Wing Watch. “Is there anything better that we can do on that day rather than to humble ourselves and to pray to an almighty God?”

The 2012 attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, in which four Americans died, took place on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Earlier, Bachmann had claimed that the nation was experiencing difficulties that could be improved by turning to God.

“It’s no secret that our nation may very well be experiencing the hand of judgment. It is no secret that we all are concerned that our nation may be in a time of decline. If that is in fact so, what is the answer?” Bachmann asked. “The answer is what we are doing here today: humbling ourselves before an almighty God, crying out to an almighty God, saying not of ourselves but you, would you save us oh God? We repent of our sins, we turn away from them, we seek you, we seek your ways.”

Bachmann has partnered with Joseph Farah, editor of the far-right publication World Net Daily, to rally support for the outlet’s Sept. 11 event. She entered an official endorsement into the Congressional Record last month.

Farah has said the event is necessary because the nation is currently seeing a “slide from moral malaise to cultural hedonism,” which he argued was exemplified by growing support for gay marriage and equal rights.

Here’s the video:

Anyone thinking we’d see the people like Bachmann tone it down was apparently mistaken.

She would fit right in in an Ahmadinejad administration.

  2. JWH says:

If 9/11 and Benghazi were “God’s judgment,” what do you call a campaign-finance ethics investigation?

  3. JKB says:

    @DC Loser:

Yes, because stating an opinion that appealing to God and entreating people to embrace more moral ways is exactly like using the violence of government to force people to act how you want them to.

He appeals are of a nature but not unlike those calling for the abandonment of capitalism and embracing the lord, Socialism. But vastly unlike the efforts to use the violence of government to force individuals to “donate” their wealth for redistribution by the Church of Social Justice.

    Umm, who was thinking that?

  5. CSK says:

She must be channeling Jerry Falwell. Didn’t he say pretty much the same thing right after September 11, 2001?

  6. Woody says:

Please do not forget that Rep. Bachmann was a serious contender in the 2012 Republican presidential primary – by both Republicans and the courtier media.

Please make it stop. It would be easier to totally dismiss her if she wasn’t so hot.

  8. G.A.Phillips says:

Letting Obama win a second term seems like God’s judgement as was the first term. 9/11 And Benghazi was the work of Islam in it’s true form.

There does seem to be a link between natural disaster and what we try to impose on Israel, can I prove it? Should I say it was God?

We have been under God’s judgement since shortly after creation. Since Jesus, I am not sure if it is God’s hand or the curse or the seals being opened.

  9. @JKB:

Yes, because stating an opinion that appealing to God and entreating people to embrace more moral ways is exactly like using the violence of government to force people to act how you want them to.

    Splitting hairs, man.

No comparison is perfect, and obviously Bachmann isn’t an Islamic dictator. But both she and Ahmadinejad are quite comfortable blending church and state.

But vastly unlike the efforts to use the violence of government to force individuals to “donate” their wealth for redistribution by the Church of Social Justice.

    You’re talking about Bush’s “faith-based initative?” Yeah, I didn’t like that either…..

    lol ok…ya that’s far…

Yet I can’t compare liberals that by way of their religion/world view murder and toss into the garbage over a million human babies a year to the Nazi…

  11. rudderpedals says:

Pretty much everyone expects incumbent GOPers to run as far to the right as possible until the primaries are wrapped up.

Does anyone else find Ms. Bachmann’s many-years-running appointment to the CIA overseer House permanent select committee on intelligence inexplicable?

  12. Argon says:

She represented the majority of voters in her district during the last few elections. I think she’s wacko but a large percentage of the religious conservatives feel likewise and believe in this “God’s judgement”, superstitious dogma. So at least one could say that she does ‘represent’ a significant fraction of the people even if it’s not the best of them.

  13. @G.A.Phillips:

Yet I can’t compare liberals that by way of their religion/world view murder and toss into the garbage over a million human babies a year to the Nazi…

    That doesn’t even make sense…..

  14. al-Ameda says:

What kind of a person takes solace in believing in a God that has innocents murdered because conservative Christians are upset about …. well, everything? Answer: malevolent true-believers like Michele Bachmann, or to put it another way, 50% of the Republican Party.

  15. edmondo says:

If God was really pissed at America, He would have made her president.

  16. So basically, Michele Bachmann agrees with Al Qeda that the US is a corrupt society that deserves to suffer for its sins, and that the thousands of deaths that occurred on 9/11 were an appropriate punishment.

  17. humanoid.panda says:

Farah has said the event is necessary because the nation is currently seeing a “slide from moral malaise to cultural hedonism,” which he argued was exemplified by growing support for gay marriage and equal rights.

Since 9/11 happened few years before the first ever gay marriage was conducted in the US, won’t it make more sense to argue that 9/11 was punishment for NOT having gay marriage?

  18. ernieyeball says:

“slide from moral malaise to cultural hedonism,”

I can’t wait!!! It will be just like Ann Margret and the Beans in Tommy!!!

I guess I’m a little confused. Both events were done by radical Islamist extremists. Is Michelle Bachmann now claiming that radical Islamist extremists are the vessels for God’s judgment? Doesn’t that suggest that God is siding with the Muslims?

  21. Scott O says:

Michelle Bachmann: We must appease the ultimate terrorist

  22. Tillman says:

God does not judge nations, he judges individuals.

On that score, Michele Bachmann might have much to answer for, especially since Matthew 6:5-6 frowns on the sort of event she was attending when she made those remarks, and really any public profession of faith made to seem righteous.

Is it any wonder atheism is on the rise with such public figures representing Christianity?

  23. anjin-san says:

Checking in from THE HELL THAT IS CARMEL VALLEY!

Still can’t decide if Bachmann is a ligit nut case, or simply a grifter. Either way, it’s scary that she is reasonably important in our government.

Although, as a lighting guy I used to work with would say – decent hooters…

  24. Franklin says:

Looking at this from a detached point-of-view: it isn’t good for the Republican party or even the conservative cause (two separate things) when Bachmann opens her mouth.

  25. Franklin says:

Also, considering both events were a ‘victory’ for Islam, I’m curious whose God made this judgment.

  26. al-Ameda says:

Checking in from THE HELL THAT IS CARMEL VALLEY!

There are far too many liberals down there on the (used to be moderate Republican territory) Monterey Peninsula. I don’t know how you put up with it. So many many dangers, but if I could offer you some advice that may save your life it is this: Be sure your credit cards are not maxxed out.

Once we finally took forced christianity out of public schools, and restarted legal abortion. god has been much nicer, wouldn’t you say?
