Mitt Romney Turns Down Invitation to Trump Debate

Mitt Romney became the latest Republican candidate for President to turn down an invitation to the December 27th Newsmax debate moderated by Donald Trump:

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said on Tuesday that he will not attend a controversial Dec. 27 debate to be moderated by real estate magnate Donald Trump, as have candidates Ron Paul and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman.

Romney told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that he will not participate in the Iowa debate, which has drawn fire from Washington Republicans as well as two of Romney’s competitors.

He gave no reason, but other Republicans have expressed concern that the event could be an embarrassment with Trump in control.

Romney joins Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul as definitely not going. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have accepted, and Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry have not expressed their intention. Hopefully, they’ll both turn it down. Something tells me there won’t be much desire to go forward with a debate featuring only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

    Something. Tells you? A tingle down your thigh? Son of sam? Tell us about this something. Report on it, perhaps….. thanks

  2. @mean:

    Let’s just say that I doubt that anyone is going to want to watch Newt, Rick, and the walking ego with hair named Donald Trump talk to themselves for two hours two days after Christmas.

  3. de stijl says:

    Unless he changes his mind tomorrow, good on Romney.

    But tomorrow is another day and the wind may blow from a new direction.

    @Doug Mataconis:

    Trump, Newt and Rick together, alone on stage. That would be better TV than Real Housewives of Atlanta. We’d all have to smoke a cigarette after that.

    We’d all have to smoke a cigarette after that.

    With that amount of slime oozing through the TV, you would probably have to take a vigorous shower as well…

    No, but I’ll watch the best bits on the web!

    Located: a single Romney vertebra.

    Bully for Romney… Glad to hear that someone in his campaign is giving him good advice… While he loses some points for not coming out sooner or harder on this (which would haven shown some much needed passion in the face of Newt), he does get some points for announcing the decision on Fox News. At the same time he loses a few points for not using the air time to explain why he made the choice.

    There is nothing on this spinning greenish-blue orb that could stop me from watching this debacle. I am marking the date on my calendar with a big Red X. And I can’t believe there aren’t thousands more just like me. The Republican Party is one big, nasty train wreck and I’m not ashamed to say I’m as enthralled as I am appalled.

  10. Franklin says:

    @michael reynolds: … and you even spelled it right in the singular form …

  11. michael reynolds says:

    @Franklin:
    I nearly didn’t. I caught it at the last minute, a fact that makes me absurdly pleased.

  12. de stijl says:

    @Franklin, @michael reynolds:

    Vertebrum?

  13. @de stijl: It’s a female noun, so in the singular (nominative) it’s vertebra and in the plural (nominative) it’s vertebrae.

  14. grumpy realist says:

    First declension, by the way.

    I bet Bachmann will say yes. Dunno about Perry.
