Muslim Cabdriver Attacker Works for Pro-Park51 Group?

The widely-publicized bias attack on a Muslim cabdriver seems to be springing a giant leak.  Ben Smith:

The apparent anti-Muslim assault on a New York city cabbie by a man shouting “Assalamu Alaikum. Consider this a checkpoint” produced an immediate round of recriminations over its connection to opposition to a New York Islamic Center and an apparent rising tide of Islamophobia.

But as often at the intersection of politics and violent crime, the story doesn’t appear to fit any easy stereotype: The alleged assailant, Michael Enright, is — according to his Facebook profile and the website of the left-leaning media organization Intersections International — a student at the School of Visual Arts and a volunteer for Intersections, which recently produced a statement of support for the Park51 project and is funded by the mainstream, liberal Collegiate Church of New York.

[…]

But this appears to be the same man: Police described Enright as a resident of Brewster, 21 years old, and an employee of an “Internet media company who had recently spent time with a combat unit in Afghanistan filming military exercises until this past May.”

Presuming this was a publicity stunt, you’d have think he’d have stabbed short of, you know, actually stabbing the guy.

  1. I think the part of the police report quoted in the Times article I linked in my post that included the word “intoxicated” may have something to do with it too

  2. Juneau: says:

Somewhat like the bomber of Russ Carnahan’s office turned out to be a disgruntled democrat. And the person who vandalized the Colorado Democrat election office in 2009 turned out to be a Democrat. And the fake TEA party liberals who spout racist and radical statements at functions, hoping to provide fodder for the media to claim the conservative movement is bad. It’s called false provocation and is part of an intentional pattern of activities. Just the same old dirty tricks from Progs. And, as usual, backfiring because they’re unsophisticated, uninspired, and unintelligent.

  3. Stephanie says:

Looking pretty shady, especially in light of other faked hate-crimes against Muslims.

  4. Franklin says:

Just the same old dirty tricks from Progs.

Yeah, and like that girl who was attacked by a Obama supporter.

  5. RW Rogers says:

Not sure how credible they are, but read of allegations this morning that an ABC News employee was responsible for inciting/provoking those attending recent demonstrators at the site.

  6. PD Shaw says:

My vote is still with some sort of crazy, aggravated by intoxication.

  7. Juneau: says:

    @ Franklin

“Yeah, and like that girl who was attacked by a Obama supporter.”

No question. That was reprehensible and dirty. And condemned in the midst of great dismay by conservatives.

However, you are dealing from a position where the score of bad plays is roughly 40 = democrats or democrat operatives (and union thugs) to 1 = republicans or republican operatives.

We had a bad apple. Between the union thugs, fake tea party members, fake tea party candidates, and things like the above… your side is literally stinking the place up.

So what? That has a simple explanation: he needed the job. If he’s a conservative and he’s out of work he’s going to turn down a job because the organization is “Pro-Park51?” Really?

On the other hand, he is supporting a Tea Party candidate (link, link) on his Facebook page. So your “giant leak” might have a giant leak.

  10. PD Shaw says:

Intersections International says that a man matching this description was a volunteeer, but was never employed there.

  11. jukeboxgrad says:

Intersections International says that a man matching this description was a volunteeer, but was never employed there.

It’s not that simple. See here:

Intersection had described Enright as a “freelancer” earlier in the day, according to Village Voice. Earlier this year, they described their relationship with Enright as “collaborative” and said Enright’s “life and interest in film, military and doing good came together in his volunteering to assist us in documenting the dialogues and creating a digital library to further the work.”

But whether he was an employee, volunteer, freelancer or whatever is beside the point. It seems that they gave him a chance to work on a film project that interested him. There’s no reason to assume he shared their politics, especially given his support for Greg Ball.

“Yeah, and like that girl who was attacked by a Obama supporter.”

You wouldn’t be talking about the girl down in New Orleans who had her nose and ribs broken along with her b/f after leaving a Republican function there?

Except that wasn’t a (as in single), it was a group. Yea I thought those were who you meant.

    @PD Shaw

” So what? That has a simple explanation: he needed the job. If he’s a conservative and he’s out of work he’s going to turn down a job because the organization is “Pro-Park51?” Really?”

    From the article:

What job? The poor guy so deeply believes in the cause he VOLUNTEERS for a group that supports the project. A left leaning group it says.

The leak of the leak that you think you found was just the leak from between your ears. Stay in the sandbox, leave the intellectual debating up to the adults. Or buy a dictionary.

PS- what would you like to bet his job in Afghanistan was to put the troops in the harshest possible light for the film?.

  13. Nikki says:

“You wouldn’t be talking about the girl down in New Orleans who had her nose and ribs broken along with her b/f after leaving a Republican function there? ”

No. He means the one with backward B carved in her cheek.

“PS- what would you like to bet his job in Afghanistan was to put the troops in the harshest possible light for the film?.”

    This says different:

Michael Enright was one of the subjects in a story that appeared in The Journal News of Westchester County on March 22, 2010, entitled “Friend’s film tells Marine’s Afghan story.” Told from the Marine Corps Base Hawaii:

    [snip]

It is that shift from teenager or twentysomething to warrior and back that Enright wants to capture in a film he is calling “Home of the Brave.” The production is Enright’s senior thesis as well as his foray into the film-festival world.

“During his (Eckner’s) last deployment, I realized there’s never been an introspective look into what it’s like being an 18-, 19-, 20-year-old soldier,” Enright said. “They grow up really fast, and also they’re still young and youthful. I thought that could be a really interesting story. Plus, he’s my buddy. I wanted to do him justice.”

  14. Nikki says:

That was from the link I posted above.

Also, Salon has some footage from his film:

    http://www.salon.com/news/crime/index.html?story=/politics/war_room/2010/08/25/cab_stabbing_update

  15. jukeboxgrad says:

what would you like to bet his job in Afghanistan was to put the troops in the harshest possible light for the film?

I would like to bet a lot, because you’ve already lost the bet. You couldn’t be more wrong. He was filming his buddy. The video looks like it could have been done by the Pentagon.

You can see it here (two videos, and what I said applies to both).

Send some money to a Democrat. You lost your stupid bet.

Like I said, Intersection International gave him a chance to work on film projects he wanted to work on. This guy is into the military (look at the books and movies reference on his Facebook page). They gave him a chance to be around military people, and film military people. Not complicated.

(I see I wasn’t as quick as Nikki.)

Just a few posts earlier, Mataconis jump to the conclusion the anti Mosque talk had inspired this act of hate. Looks like some folks just have no credibility. In drag racing terms Doug, you red lighted. But then that is not the first time and it certainly, considering your perspective, not the last by a long way. Cannot wait to see what you have to write November 3rd.

  17. Juneau: says:

    @ jukeboxgrad

“On the other hand, he is supporting a Tea Party candidate (link, link) on his Facebook page. So your “giant leak” might have a giant leak.”

The links you provide don’t support your statement. Greg Ball doesn’t appear in this man’s friends list, nor is there any link from his facebook page to the Greg Ball web sites you linked to.

At this point, your statement appears to be false, and misleading.

  18. jukeboxgrad says:

At this point, your statement appears to be false, and misleading.

Correct, it does look that way. That’s because the link has been removed (which is not at all surprising). Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I thought this might happen, so I saved it. You can see it here. Look under “Other.”

  19. jukeboxgrad says:

And just to be clear, that was a link to Ball’s Facebook page, not his campaign page.

  20. jukeboxgrad says:

And it might be helpful to notice that someone else noticed the Ball link on Enright’s page, before I did. See here, comment at 2:17 pm.

  21. jukeboxgrad says:

And Enright’s link to Ball was also noted here:

Enright’s Facebook page also lists him as a supporter of Assemblyman Greg Ball, the maverick conservative Republican who represents his home district and is running a heated primary campaign for the New York State Senate. While Ball is an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration (here’s a video of him talking about illegal immigration as he walks through Enright’s home town), he has never made a statement about the Cordoba House. Ball was unavailable for comment at press time.

  22. jukeboxgrad says:

And Enright’s link to Ball was also noted here (see the comment at 4:33 pm):

The alleged attacker, Enright, strongly identified with the military. Check out this profile in a local paper describing his documentary work in Afghanistan: http://m.lohud.com/detail.jsp?key=343865&rc=wc&full=1 He also “likes” State Assemblyman Greg Ball, a Republican and Tea-Party-backed candidate for State Senate who’s infamous for his anti-immigrant fervor. See Enright’s Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Enright/546564905 A sense of who he is starts to emerge.

So a bunch of people saw that link before it got scrubbed.

  23. jukeboxgrad says:

And Enright’s link to Ball was also noted here:

The following is a series of photographs of Michael Enright, alleged hate-crime stabber of a Muslim cab driver, downloaded from his public Facebook page and those of his friends. Enright, who’s emerging as more complex than a classic out-of-town Islamophobe (though he does count among his Likes on Facebook the Tea Party politician Greg Ball), is currently 21, according to news accounts; he was raised in Brewster, NY, near the Connecticut border, roughly six miles due west of Danbury and forty miles north of the city, where he lives now as an SVA student.

  24. Juneau says:

    @ jukeboxgrad

    “See Enright’s Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Enright/546564905 :”

No, it is (was) not. Y’all keep talking about it as if it is a fact, but every link I follow (including the ones you supply) have nothing there.

  25. anjin-san says:

  26. jukeboxgrad says:

every link I follow (including the ones you supply) have nothing there

The situation is confusing. Let’s see if I can clarify what’s going on. The address of Enright’s Facebook page is this:

    http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Enright/546564905

It’s true that if you click on that link you will find no link to Ball. Why? Because at some point today, someone removed the link. However, before the link was removed, I took a screenshot. The screenshot is stored here:

    http://bit.ly/9t8ooJ

If you click on that link you will see a picture of what Enright’s Facebook page looked like before the link to Ball was removed.

Above I provided many other links to other people who saw the page, and saw the link to Ball, before the link was scrubbed. This is to demonstrate that I’m not the only person who ever saw the link. If you go to those other sites, they link to Enright’s Facebook page, and when you click through to Enright’s Facebook page, of course you will not see the link to Ball, because the link has been scrubbed. But, one more time, if you click here…

    http://bit.ly/9t8ooJ

… you will see the way Enright’s Facebook page looked before the link got scrubbed. Clear now?

So when you say “every link I follow,” keep in mind that only one link will show you what you’re looking for. That link is this one:

    http://bit.ly/9t8ooJ

Did you try clicking on that link?

  27. ratufa says:

Seriously, when stories like this first appear, everyone, liberal and conservative, should just STFU for a few days until we know more about what actually happened and the people involved. Because, without accurate information, these stories are just a Rorschach blot on which everyone can project their favorite theories about the perfidies of the other side.

  28. jukeboxgrad says:

<i>every link I follow (including the ones you supply) have nothing there.</i>

I posted lots of links, directly and indirectly, so maybe you don’t understand which one has what you’re looking for. It’s this one:

    http://bit.ly/9t8ooJ

Under the heading “Other,” the first item is “Greg Ball.”

  29. john personna says:

I was going to say that you guys looked like you were jumping the gun.  I guess so:

The alleged perpetrator is not an employee and has never been an employee of Intersections. There is a person who fits the description of the alleged perpetrator who has worked with us as a volunteer, but until we get further confirmation of the details in this incident, we cannot comment.

    http://www.intersectionsinternational.org/news/2010-08-25/intersections-statement-recent-hate-crime

Beyond that, look at yourselves.  You were like “since he’s a liberal it doesn’t count.”

It’s not like a “real American” attacked somebody, right?
