Obama Loses Bill Ayers, Not That He Ever Really Had Him

Ever since the 2008 Presidential campaign, conservatives have been tying President Obama to Bill Ayers, the University of Illinois at Chicago Professor and former member of the radical 1960s group the Weather Underground. Ayers, we are told, was the man who helped “launch” Obama’s political career when he first sought a seat in the Illinois legislature, and, of course we were reminded of things Ayers has been accused of doing when Barack Obama was a mere child. It didn’t work in 2008, and it didn’t work when they tried to do it again in 2012. Now, it’s going to be just a little harder for them to make the case that the President is some kind of ideological kindred spirit with this aging 60s radical:

Bill Ayers, whose relationship with President Obama was the subject of much intrigue during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, now says the president should be tried for war crimes.

Ayers, the former Weather Underground member and University of Illinois at Chicago professor, told Real Clear Politics that Obama is “absolutely” engaged in terrorist activity by using drones and “absolutely” should be tried for war crimes.

“Every president in this century should be put on trial,” Ayers said. “Every one of them goes into an office dripping with blood and then adds to it. And, yes, I think that these are war crimes. I think that they’re acts of terror.”

Ayers said he would give Obama a failing grade for his presidency but praised his personal style.

Next thing you know, Obama’s “spiritual mentor” Jeremiah Wright will be denouncing him. Oh, wait a minute.

Bill Ayers wasn’t just “accused” of criminal actions, he did them.

Yeah, but you know how it is, its always okay when you do these things yourself, because you had good reasons.

But it will be interesting to see how the GOP spins this. On the one hand, they’re probably happy to throw mud at Obama. On the other hand, most of them think the drone strikes are good policy. My guess is they’ll try something along the lines of saying drone strikes in general are good, but bad when Obama does them. Similarly, if a GOP president gets elected next, those (and its not universal) Democrats who support Obama using them will decide that the GOP President will be using them in a war-crime kind of way.

I say this with full confidence, based on the history of war crimes accusations with Bush have gone.

And hence the difference between partisan (it’s ok when we do it, it’s a war-crime when they do it) versus ideologue (it’s always bad).

Here’s another recent example of partisan punditry at its best:

Bill Ayers the same guy who according to smart as a whip, dumb as a brick Palin said that President Obama was paling around with! Well Bill Ayers can join Sarah Palin on the crazy train.
If anyone should be charged with war crimes it’s Bush, Cheney & Rumsfeld!

Ayers has found out that he’s disposable, and Obama’s promises all come with expiration dates.

The unrepentant terrorist is only now learning what the rest of use have known for years.

Jenos, the things you know could be written on the point of a pin…. with room to spare.

Obama just pulled off another victory. Next up, Reverend Wright.

So now it’s convenient for you to side with a terrorist?
    Welcome, Comrade Jenos.

  9. Jenos Idanian says:

@al-Ameda: “Siding” with Ayers? The SOB should still be in prison.

I’m enjoying the irony of an admitted traitor feeling betrayed.

@al-Ameda: Funny, I was going to post a countdown to the first Rightie who held up Ayers as a martyr to the vicious Obama, but Jenos actually started doing it before I could make the joke.

Is it possible that toads like this really think they aren’t transparent?

  11. Steve V says:

@Jenos Idanian: What promises did Obama make to Ayers?

The enemy of my enemy is my friend?

Wow, look who’s “palling around with terrorists” now!

  13. Jenos Idanian says:

@Steve V: What promises did Obama make to Ayers?

Who knows? Who cares? Obama made a whole lot of promises to the American people, and he’s broken scads of them.

Personally, I think Ayers is being a tad hypocritical. He plotted to kill American citizens with bombs, but failed. Obama’s killed American citizens with drone strikes, and that bothers Ayers.

Maybe he’s jealous that Obama has been more successful?

Honestly, why does anyone even TRY to write fiction these days? You can’t make this stuff up.
