Server Move 9-10pm Eastern

Expect possible down time, site wonkiness.

The long-anticipated move to a new, more powerful server is set for the 9 o’clock hour this evening. Afterwards, you should notice significantly faster site loads and it opens up some improved backend options as well.

There will be sporadic downtime as the move occurs and then some latency as the site resolves to the new IP; that should take less than an hour. Comments posted during that time could conceivably disappear as well.

The move will break an ancient plugin that we use to support formatting of comments, so we’ll move to a different plugin that’ll take a bit of getting used to.

UPDATE: The move took closer to two hours than one, presumably a function of there being 49,000 posts and 1.2 million comments in the database. The pages should definitely be loading faster. Let me know if you notice any wonkiness.

    …site wonkiness

Like the time last year when I shifted my car from Park to Drive and it went backwards when I stepped on the gas.

It is 10:36 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Do you know where your server is?

It is looking for BOLD, Italics, Blockquote et. al.

(Clicked Preview and got Preview Error message. Now I will attempt Post Comment.)

  4. Mister Bluster says:

    That worked!
Now I can see bold, italics, link and quote buttons.

@Mister Bluster: Yes, slightly different (and fewer) formatting options in this plugin. The newer server runs PHP7 whereas the old ran PHP5. The old plugin wasn’t compatible.

  6. OzarkHillbilly says:

@James Joyner: Well, these are the only ones I ever really used (the was handy from time to time) anyway.

ETA: Heh, just commenting on the del button caused the server to automatically bookend it and crossed out the back end of my comment.
