Texas Congressman Wants To Allow Guns On House Floor

There have been plenty of idiotic calls for increased restrictions on First or Second Amendment rights in the wake of the Arizona shootings, here’s some idiocy coming from the other directions:

Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert says his office is drafting a measure to allow members of Congress to carry guns in the District of Columbia, including in the Capitol and on the House floor.

Gohmert says he and his colleagues need to be able to protect themselves, in light of the mass shooting in Arizona.

“It’d be a good thing for members of Congress who want to carry a weapon in the District,” he said. “I know friends that walk home from the Capitol. There’s no security for us,” he said, adding that the measure would deter people from attacking members. “There is some protection in having protection.”

Congressman, why not just supply every Member of Congress with a cane?

Why is this idiotic? Who cares if they’re carrying while on the House floor?

Because, as I’m sure you’ll agree, there are a lot of idiots in congress. And also most of them are lousy shots.

Therefore, we’ll amass huge liabilities for disability on the job. And all because the other idiot was a lousy shot and didn’t just kill him.

A lifetime of disability benefits instead of a quick death settlement.

“Who cares if they’re carrying while on the House floor?”

Have you read ANYTHING about the new republicans in congress?

  4. Jack says:

Someone suggested if this was implemented they should surround both the House and Senate chambers with bulletproof glass to keep the stray shots from hurting any spectators.

    Nice, Doug. Perfect moral equivalency.

On the one hand, people who, in the wake of an attempted political assassination, and a successful mass murder carried out with a handgun suggest we might want to rethink lax gun laws.

On the other hand two vote-chasing imbeciles from Texas who think we need more guns in close proximity to congressmen.

The NRA owns the GOP like a Moscow pimp owns his “girls.”

Gohmert is the one that was warning of “terrorist babies”. He’s an utter idiot. It’s embarrassing that people like him get elected.

  7. anjin-san says:

Maybe they should carry grease guns at the ready with shoulder straps. How about Thompson machine guns? That is kind of a statement weapon…

  8. An Interested Party says:

“The NRA owns the GOP like a Moscow pimp owns his ‘girls.’”

Indeed…and many Democratic politicians have been far too cowed by this pimp to oppose the NRA in any meaningful way…

  9. wr says:

Too generous to the Dems here. They may not be owned by the NRA, but they’re desperate for the privelege, and snivel after the organization hoping for some scraps that might have dropped out of its pocket.
